Army Falls to Navy at Star Meet
February 03, 2018 | Men's Track and Field
ANNAPOLIS, MD. - The Army West Point men's track and field team fell to service-academy rival Navy, 97-84, in the annual Army-Navy Star match Saturday morning.Â
Coach's Quotes:Â
"I thought we competed really well today," said head coach Mike Smith. "I wish the outcome was different obviously, but the Navy men competed very well and it came down to a very small margin in a lot of events between first and second. You have to have more first place finished because of the point scoring system. We were unable to get the right number of fives to pull it out. If you look at the results, in event after event, our people are running, jumping and throwing lifetime bests, but there is a Navy person just ahead of them by centimeters or tenths of a second, and that made the difference."
Â
"These are the best marks we've had as a team since I've been here, but they weren't enough, and there weren't enough wins. Having said that, we had some great wins."
Â
"Lee [Bares] won the pole vault, again. Tyrell [Maddox] won the 500 meters, again. Tyler Davis won the 60m, and Ben Petrella won the 3K. Jeff Giannettino in the high jump. Some of those marks were just outstanding. We were good, just not good enough."
Â
"We were equaling our lifetime bests or we were setting lifetime bests, and Navy was doing the same. It was really a very good, competitive, men's dual meet and we just came up on the short end of it. But I can't tell this team we didn't compete well, because we did. We just got beat by a better team."
