Black Knights Place Fifth at Ted Nelson Invitational
January 13, 2018 | Women's Track and Field
WEST POINT, NY – The Army West Point women's track and field team took fifth place at Texas A&M on Saturday.
After a tough two-day battle, the Black Knights scored 52.5 points at the Ted Nelson Invitational, which was good for fifth place. The team performed against tough competitors such as Texas A&M, Abilene Christian, Texas State, UT-Arlington, Stephen F. Austin,Clemson, and University of Texas San Antonio.
COACH'S QUOTES:
"I expected this be a very competitive meet and indeed it was," said head coach Mike Smith. "The speed and power events were particularly competitive and our young team did not back down from that challenge."
"In the team scoring we finished in the middle of the pack, but we were not out of our league. Sometimes you have concerns about how young athletes will handle the competitive level of a meet like this, but by and large our women rose to the challenge and did a nice job of competing. I don't think we are where I would like us to be but I think we are headed in that direction."
"There were definitely bright spots for us today. Briyah Brown won the shot and broke her own school record in the process. She is really on a roll in both the shot and the weight. Abby Halbrook did a nice job in the 3k, Sam Coletti raced well in the mile, and Jennifer Reis was a nice surprise in the pole vault."
"We had hoped to get some improvements in our marks and we accomplished that today. We have a lot of work to do, but I like what I saw today and am pleased with our direction."
