Army Rallies in Final Events at West Point Open

WEST POINT, N.Y. – In fourth place after four events, the Army West Point Gymnastics pulled ahead of William & Mary 318.45-316.00 in the fifth event and held on in the final events to place third (380.35-395.06) at the 27th Annual West Point Open Friday evening at Christl Arena.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – In fourth place after four events, the Army West Point Gymnastics pulled ahead of William & Mary 318.45-316.00 in the fifth event and held on in the final events to place third (380.35-395.06) at the 27th Annual West Point Open Friday evening at Christl Arena.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- No. 7 Penn State captured its fifth straight title and 20th overall outpointing the field 406.85. Navy was second 9395.05) followed by Army (380.35), the Tribe (378.30) and Springfield (369.25) in rounding out the collegiate field. Temple, a club team, posted a 223.05.
- Six Black Knights qualified for Saturday's individual finals in four of the six events. Cole Casanova meet the standard in floor exercise with a 13.70 to earn fifth, freshman Taka Giese tied for fifth on still rings with a 13.00 and Elliott Herman tied for eighth (12.80), Ryan Wilson turned in Army's highest mark sharing first on vault with a 14.45 just shy of his career mark of 14.70.
- Nathan Goff and Nick McAfee met the standard on parallel bars as they tied each other scoring identical 13.25s to place eighth.
- In all-around scoring, Darrell Yamamura placed fifth with a 73.65 turning in his highest finish of 12.70 on vault to tie for 12th place. His highest score for the evening was a 13.35 on vault.
- In addition to qualifying for Saturday's finals in floor exercise, Casanova just missed the top eight on vault where he finished with a 14.10 for ninth place.
- In addition to parallel bars, Goff just missed meeting the standard on pommel horse after placing 10th (12.65).
- Also turning in strong performances was Alex Tombrink of 11th on high bar (12.75). Brandon Shively tied for 12th on pommel horse (12.20).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army began the night on the parallel bars where it turned out a team score of 62.75.
- Goff and McAfee led the individual scorers both with marks of 13.25.
- The Black Knights then moved to the high bar with Tombrink with the team's top score of 12.75.
- He was followed by Yamamura who garnered a 12.70.
- Black Knights posted 66.10 on floor exercise with Casanova turning in Army's top individual score of 13.70.
- Seth Cannon followed with 13.200.
- On still rings Army composited a 62.25. Giese turned in team's top individual mark on still rings 13.00.
- Elliott Herman was next at 12.800 followed by Ryan Wilson (12.300) and Darrel Yamamura (12.200).
- Goff turned in the team's stop score of 12.650 on pommel horse.
- The vault was Army's premier event and notched its highest event score of the night at 69.20.
- Wilson garnered a 14.450 to lead the Black Knights and was followed by Casanova with a 14.10.

- The Black Knights return to Christl Arena for the finals portion of the West Point Open. Festivities are set to begin at 7 p.m.
