Army Prepped for Bush Cup Showdown with Stanford
September 07, 2017 | Men's Golf
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's golf team kicks off its 2017-18 season Friday against Stanford at the Bush Cup.
Â
This year's edition pits the Black Knights against the Cardinal, with four foursome rounds played in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon.
Â
The Bush Cup, now in its third year, is set for the historic Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif.
Â
"Our team is very excited to get out to San Francisco and open the fall season with the Third Annual Bush Cup," Army head coach Chad Bagley said. "We can't think of a better way to start a season than competing against a great team in the Stanford Cardinal, playing at such a historic venue in the Olympic Club, and honoring the selfless service of our 41st President, President George H.W. Bush. We are honored to be a part of the Bush Cup and we appreciate all the hard work by the Bush Cup Foundation, the Olympic Club, and the Stanford Cardinal Athletic Department to make this event so special."
Â
Army returns six letterwinners from a season ago, including team captain Dean Sakata. Now in his final year, Sakata hopes to lead the Cadets to their 12th Patriot League title. The team is comprised of one senior, two juniors, three sophomores and four rookies.
Â
The Bush Cup Foundation was established in 2015 to "promote collegiate sports and inspire athletes to strive for personal excellence as well as service to our country as exemplified by the life of President George H.W. Bush.
Â
President Bush was honored by the dedication of the event and stated, "Not only will the tournament bear my name, but more importantly it recognizes service to country ... I am proud to be part of what I am sure will be a hugely successful annual event."
              Â
The inaugural Bush Cup was contested at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, N.Y., between Army West Point and Yale, President Bush's alma mater. Last season, Army West Point faced Northwestern at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois.
Â
The Bush Cup Foundation will also be awarding a humanitarian award to the Fisher Family, represented by Kenneth Fisher. Fisher is the chairman and CEO of the Fisher House Foundation, an organization that builds and runs "comfort homes," allowing the families of hospitalized active-duty military personnel and veterans to stay near their loved ones at no cost. Ken Fisher has overseen the construction of 71 Fisher Houses throughout the United States and has expanded operations to Germany and the United Kingdom.
              Â
The Bush Cup Foundation is a registered 501c3 organization dedicated to promoting goodwill celebrating amateur golf and recognizing Army West Point and their service to our country.
              Â
President Bush has been an active participant in the event held in his honor. He calls, writes and is completely engaged in almost every aspect of the Bush Foundation. His daughter Dorothy (Doro) is an active member of the Bush Foundation's advisory committee, along with other notables like Jim Nantz, Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Phil Mickelson.Â
              Â
Boasting 45 holes of magnificent golf, The Olympic Club has hosted multiple national championships, U.S. Open Championships, PGA Tour Championships, U.S. Amateurs and the U.S. Junior Amateur.
