Second-Half Surge Falls Short Against Lafayette
September 27, 2017 | Women's Soccer
EASTON, Pa. – The Army West Point women's soccer team fired 12 second-half shots, but was unable to overcome a 1-0 setback at Lafayette on Wednesday night.
The Black Knights dropped to 2-8-1 and 0-3-0 in Patriot League action, while the Leopards improved to 3-4-2 on the year and 1-1-1 in league play.
After an uneventful first half that saw a total of three shots between the two squads, the final 45 minutes was packed with action. Army recorded 12 of the second half's 17 combined shots with both Maggie Pohl and Sydney Cassalia being tested on multiple occasions in goal.
Lafayette found the back of the net 49 seconds into the half after stealing a failed clearance and putting it past the Army goalie. Three minutes later in the 48th minute, rookie Lizzie Harper nearly found the equalizer as she turned and fired a shot from the edge of the box that crept just right of the goal. The Monroeville, Pa., native provided another quality chance in the 53rd minute when she controlled the ball after it bounced around the box and sent another shot wide.
Army's rookies were very influential in the second half and got into the attack as well, starting in the 58th minute when rookie Emily Torres dribbled through the Leopards' defense and uncorked a shot that forced Pohl to punch the ball over the crossbar. Another first-year Cristal Trejo forced the Lafayette keeper to make another diving stop, this time deflecting the ball off the crossbar to make the stop in the 62nd minute.
The Leopards responded in the 68th minute when a shot from distance forced Cassalia to elevate and puch the attempt at goal over the bar. The Omaha, Neb., native was quick off her line in the 76th minute to make the sliding stop. Two minutes later, Sydney Witham maneuvered through the Leopards' back line and test Pohl yet again who needed to make a diving stop.
