Army Collects Four Weekly Patriot League Honors
August 21, 2017 | Women's Soccer
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Army West Point women's soccer team captured four of the five weekly honors from the Patriot League after a solid first week to the season.
Lauryn Westman was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week, while Clare Shea was named Midfielder of the Week. Additionally, Sydney Witham earned Defensive Player of the Week honors and Sydney Cassalia collected Rookie of the Week accolades.
Westman netted Army's lone goal of the opening weekend in the 82nd minute against Iona. Witham's free kick was deflected before Westman controlled it on the right side of the box and fired a shot inside the left post for her first-career goal.
Shea was an integral component for the Black Knights in their transition from defense to offense. The senior co-captain from Allendale, N.J., fired a team-high seven shots with four on target. She nearly recorded the game-winner in the 65th minute against UMass Lowell when she ripped a shot from 15 yards off the post.
Witham was a key piece to a defensive line for Army that allowed just 13 shots in its first two games and only three on goal. The junior defender recorded the first point of her career on Westman's game-winner against Iona and stood up the UMass Lowell attack at the edge of the box multiple times.
Cassalia started her career off with a shutout against Iona, becoming the first Army goalkeeper since 2004 to earn a shutout victory in her career debut. She added another blank sheet against the Riverhawks marking the first time Army shut out its first two opponents in a season since 1996. The Omaha, Neb., native saved all three shots that have come her way.
The Black Knights return to the pitch Thursday as Syracuse comes to West Point. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
