Rifle Announces 2017-18 Schedule
August 21, 2017 | Rifle
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point head rifle coach Web Wright has released the 2017-18 schedule which features five home matches at the Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
"We are really looking forward to this upcoming season," said Coach Wright. "We have devised a schedule that pits us against all of the mainstay GARC teams, but we have also introduced a couple of teams we don't normally see during the regular season. I like the pace and tempo of this schedule and the way it peaks for the NCAA Qualifier and GARC championships."
Six teams on Army's schedule participated at last year's NCAA's led by five-time champion West Virginia. TCU placed second, Nebraska third, Murray State fourth, Kentucky seventh, and Air Force eighth. The Mountaineers, Wildcats, and Cornhuskers are members of the Great America Rifle Conference along with the Black Knights.
"This year we are traveling quite a bit more," stated Wright. "We start off with a tough three-day weekend slated against Ole Miss, Murray State and Memphis, then follow that up with a trip out to Lincoln, Neb., to shoot against the Huskers. Then we will be at home through the Winter break."
"We kick back off after the holiday with a couple of home matches then start the final stretch toward the "Star" match with Navy and the NCAA Championships."
The Black Knights will start their season with a conference matchup at Ole Miss on Oct.7. After four away contests in a row, the team will travel to Annapolis, Md., where Navy will host Air Force, Army, and Coast Guard for the annual President's Trophy Match on Nov. 4.
Army will return home for a four-match homestand on Nov.10, starting with a triangular against Nevada-Reno and MIT. The squad will end the fall with a home contest against NCAA runner-up TCU (Nov.18).
Coming back from the winter break, the Black Knights begin the winter/spring with a conference home match against Kentucky, who placed seventh in the NCAAs, on Jan. 13. Army immediately follows that with a match against North Carolina State slated for Jan. 15.
Army will square off against conference foe Akron at the Palmyra Invitational on Jan. 28 before heading back to Annapolis to take on the Mids for the annual Army-Navy Star match on Feb. 3.
The Black Knights will close out the regular season on Feb. 17 against MIT in the NCAA Qualifier. Army hopes to earn its first spot in the Championship since 2014.
Coach Wright and the squad opens the postseason when they head to the GARC Championships in Morgantown, W.Va., Feb. 23-24. The Black Knights are hoping their run includes a trip the following month to the 2017 NCAA Championships, March 9-10, in The Citadel, S.C.
The squad had a solid finish to last year finishing fifth in the GARC Championships, second in the President's Trophy Match, and defeated Navy for the eighth year in a row to secure the Star.
