Fall Schedule Released for Cross Country
July 25, 2017 | Men's Cross Country
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army West Point Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Mike Smith has released the 2017 fall cross country schedule which is highlighted by the annual Army-Navy meet and the Army Open.
"Our men's and women's cross country schedule was designed so that we could provide more opportunities for most members of the team to compete," said Smith. "We have a much bigger roster now than in the past, so we need to give our athletes time to assert themselves through training and eventually competition."
The opening meet is a dual at the University of Maine, in Orono on Sept. 1. The Army Open at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., will be held on Sept. 15. The last meet of the month will be the Paul Short Invitational, in Bethlehem, Pa., on the 29th.
"The first meets are designed to allow the majority of our team to run and showcase their fitness," Smith added. "The Paul Short Invitational will be the first meet where we really get to test ourselves. It is also the same course that we will run at the Patriot League Championships so it makes sense for us to get out there once before we run it in late October."
The Black Knights will kick off October by hosting Navy on Oct. 14 in Wappingers Falls, N.Y., for the Star also at Bowdoin Park.
"The Star meet this year will be held at nearby Bowdoin Park, which has hosted many high level high school meets in recent years," said Smith. "We like the opportunity to get our people out on a course that has become an iconic venue for kids from the Northeast."
On Oct. 28, the Patriot League Championships will be hosted by Lehigh in Bethlehem, Pa. The Northeast Regional Championships are to take place on Nov. 10 in Buffalo, N.Y., and to close the fall season the NCAA Championships will be held on November 18 in Louisville, Ky., for team members who qualify.
"The Northeast Regional meet will be at a site that I am not familiar with so that will be exciting for us all," noted Smith. "The NCAA meet in Louisville is a course that I have seen a number of times, but will be new to any of our team members that qualify. We are excited to get started and looking forward to improving on all of our performances from last year. We have a nice group of new cadets that will join us in three weeks and then we'll see what kind of teams we have."
