Alberici Honored with Coach K Award

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point men's lacrosse head coach Joe Alberici was among the recipients of the Mike Krzyzewski Award for Excellence in Teaching Character Through Sport awards on Monday evening.
The winners were announced at the Cadet Mess Hall during the 11th annual dinner and Coach K recognizes West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership.
Krzyzewski, a 1969 USMA graduate and former basketball player and coach, presented the awards, a certificate and medal. Alberici and Krzyzewski have a connection with Duke University as Alberici was an assistant coach with the Blue Devils' men's lacrosse program prior to coming to West Point.
"Receiving the Coach K Award is a tremendous honor for the whole Army Lacrosse Family," Alberici said. "I am blessed to work alongside an amazing coaching staff and with the very best young men our country has to offer. It is a privilege to play a part in the leadership development of our cadet-athletes at West Point."
The awards recognize West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership. The cadet recipient exemplifies the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage both on-and-off the "fields of friendly strife."
The coach recipient is an exceptional leader who exemplifies the Army Values of integrity, respect, selfless service, duty, honor, loyalty, and personal courage. This individual does much more than win games - he or she earns the respect and trust of athletes and makes a profound impact on their lives both as athletes and officers.
Alberici and his team just finished a great year with a 12-4 record, including wins over two top five opponents and five teams in the top 20. The 12 wins by the Black Knights tied a program record for wins in a single season and Army finished the year as the 14th-ranked team in the nation according to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Coaches Poll. The Black Knights tied a program record with nine consecutive wins during the year and made its third straight appearance in the Patriot League championship game.
in his career, Alberici has mentored a countless number of players that have achieved a lot both on and off the field. In 12 years at the helm, he has coached a total of 21 All-American certificates, nine Patriot League major award winners, seven Academic All-Americans, four Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year and two Senior CLASS Award winners.
In addition, nine of his players have been selected in the Major League Lacrosse draft. Alberici and the Black Knights continued their success in league play in 2016 with another visit to the Patriot League title game. Army remains the only team in league history to make all 12 Patriot League Tournament semifinal rounds.
