WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's tennis team collected a slew of postseason honors from the Patriot League announced Monday.
The conference revealed its all-league teams and major awards winners, highlighted with Army's three major award winners.
Junior Michael Nguyen led the way for the Black Knights after being named the Patriot League Player of the Year, a member of the Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year and received All-Patriot League First Team nods.
The second half of the Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year goes to senior Grant Riechmann, who was also named to the All-Patriot League Second Team. Jim Poling closed out the Black Knights honors after being named the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
Sam Lampman joined Nguyen on the first team, while David Mitchell was selected to the second team with Riechmann.
After playing his entire junior year at the No. 1 flight, Nguyen went 16-7 overall in the spring and 5-0 in regular season of Patriot League play. During the tournament, Nguyen went 1-1 with the win coming in the championship match against rival Navy. Throughout the season he beat Navy's Thomas Pecor, twice in straight sets and split the two meetings with Boston University's Lucas Bombonatti. Other notable wins in the spring include beating Robert Seby from UC Santa Clara, Vidit Vaghela from Buffalo, Nick Borchenko from Loyola Marymount, and Ludovico Cestarollo from Binghamton.
In doubles, Nguyen and Riechmann combined to go 16-6 overall and 4-1 in conference action. At the start of the season the team played at No. 2 doubles and secured wins over both UConn and Michigan State. After moving to No. 1 singles they finished 1-1 against Boston U. and Navy, while also picking up wins over Air Force, Bryant and Binghamton.
Head coach Jim Poling led the Black Knights to an overall record of 21-9 with a 6-1 mark in the league. This will be the sixth time that Poling has been awarded the coach of the year honor and the fourth-straight year he has led the team to an 18-plus win season. The team captured its 10th league title after defeating Navy for the championship, granting the Black Knights their eighth NCAA tournament berth.
The win handed Army its second consecutive NCAA appearance. The Cadets are set to head back to the Golden State for the second straight season as well when they face off with UCLA. Just a year ago, the Black Knights traveled to No. 13 California.
Lampman was a first team selection for the third time in his career. Mitchell joined the second team for the second year in a row.
The All-League teams are made of six student-athletes on each the first team and the second team. Of the 12 players that made the team, four are seniors, five are juniors, and three are sophomores.
Army led the way with the most overall picks of four student-athletes across the first and second teams. Both Boston U. and Navy totaled two athletes each, while Bucknell, Colgate, Lehigh and Loyola were represented by one apiece.
The major awards and all-league teams were voted on by the seven Patriot League head coaches who could not vote for their student-athletes and selves.
Army departs for UCLA to take on the Bruins in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday. The match will kick off at noon Pacific Time.
