WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point track and field teams advanced six individual qualifiers for the NCAA Regional meet in Lexington Ky., on May 25-27.
Â
The six qualifiers include senior Jacob Fong in the 3000-meter steeplechase, Nick Causey in the 800-meter run, Keagan Smith in the 1500-meter run, Jeff Giannettino in the high jump, Lee Bares in the pole vault and Abby Halbrook in the 1500-meter run.
Â
"There were no surprises for us today in seeing the declared list for the NCAA preliminary round," commented director of track and field Mike Smith. "We thought that we could get six individuals into the meet and that is what happened. We have six different event qualifiers which is the largest number of opportunities since I have been here at West Point," added Smith.
Â
"We only have one senior in the group which is somewhat unusual. We also have one freshman which is extraordinary. In fact, there are only four freshman qualifiers of the 48 in the 1500-meter run which really highlights the significance of Smith's accomplishments this spring. Smith went on the add "Abby Halbrook is our only female representative at the meet. She has made some great progress this spring and I am happy to see her get this opportunity. Lee Bares and Jeff Giannettino have been here before so I hope they draw from their previous experience. Our final qualifier is Nick Causey who has really come on strong this spring. He continues to get better and better with each race so I am eager to see how he competes in this environment."
Â
Smith closed with "I know that our whole group is excited about the opportunity before them and once we complete final exams we will be able to focus on the championship and see what we can accomplish."
Â
The East NCAA Regional meet will take place at the University of Kentucky in Lexington Ky. The first round of the 1500-meter run and 800-meter run will take place on Thursday, followed by the quarterfinal for the 800-meter on Friday and the quarterfinal for the 1500 meter on Saturday. The men's 3000-meter steeplechase will have a quarterfinal on Friday along with the men's pole vault. Finally, the men's high jump will be on Saturday.
