Army Battles #5 UCLA in NCAA First Round

LOS ANGELES - The Army West Point men's tennis team took on fifth-seeded UCLA on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA tournament and dropped a 4-0 decision to the Bruins at the Sunset Canyon Courts.
The Bruins took the doubles point with Austin Rapp and DiGuilio defeating Sam Lampman and Gregory Shannon in the No. 2 spot by a 6-1 score. Nikita Pereverzin and Myles Conlin played well in the third spot, but Maxime Cressy and Ben Goldberg recorded the win, 6-4. Grant Riechmann and Michael Nguyen were matching the Bruins' Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu game-for-game and were down only 6-5 when the match was called.
In singles action, Zhu handed the Bruins a 2-0 lead with a 6-0, 6-3, straight-set victory over Riechmann in the third spot in the lineup. Rapp earned the third point for the Bruins with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Michael Sienko in the sixth position.
At the top spot in the lineup, Nguyen hung with 60th-ranked Gage Brymer in the early going, but Brymer won in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-4 score and the Bruins came away with the 4-0 win.
David Mitchell played a great match in the fourth position against Logan Staggs and was down just 3-2 in the second set when the contest was decided. Lampman battled in his match at the No. 2 spot when his match was called, while Myles Conlin was climbing back at No. 5 at the end.
Army finishes its season at 21-10 and won its second straight Patriot League crown to get to the NCAA tournament. The Bruins will take on Ole Miss in the second round and improve to 22-9 overall on the year.
