FISHKILL, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team notched a 4-1 victory over Marist here Wednesday night during the 12th annual Z93.3 Hudson Valley Baseball Classic.
With the win, the Black Knights now hold a 7-5 all-time edge in the classic and have won back-to-back titles for the third time (2016 & 2017, 2013 & 2014, and 2009 & 2010)
Army broke the scoreless deadlock in the second inning when Trey Martin touched home following a fielding error on the shortstop.
The Cadets added on in the fifth after Matt Hudgins singled in Jon Rosoff with two outs. Rosoff led off the inning with a single before a Kris Lindner sacrifice bunt shifted him to second. John McCarthy grounded out on the ensuing play to advance the junior over to third base before Hudgins brought him home with his shot up the middle.
The Red Foxes would cut that lead in half with an unearned run in the sixth, but the Black Knights quickly responded in the bottom half after Martin crossed home plate for the second time. The sophomore earned a walk to kick off the inning. After a Marist pitching change, the Red Foxes registered the inning's first out. During the next at bat though Josh White doubled to right field, shifting the runners into scoring position. After another pitching change, Jacob Hurtubise grounded out to second to bring home the Cadets' third run in the game.
Army closed out its scoring in the seventh when Alex Dickerson's single to left center brought home McCarthy from second base.
Blake Walters then came in to close out the final two innings, allowing only two hits in his first career save opportunity.
Rosoff finished 2-for-2 with three walks and one run scored. McCarthy, Hudgins, Dickerson, Martin, White and David Monge all posted hits in the game as well.
Rookie Drake Titus (3-2) earned the win on the mound, after pitching three innings giving up just four hits.
