Army Seeded #1 at Patriot League Tournament

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's tennis team snagged the overall top seed heading into the Patriot League Tournament this weekend. The Black Knights will face off against the winner of the #8 Lafayette and #9 Holy Cross match, which will take place on Thursday at 1 p.m.
Action will kick-off for the cadets on Friday at 8 a.m., in Annapolis, Md. The primary site for the action will be at the United State Naval Academy Tennis Court (outdoor), but may move to the Tose Family Tennis Center (indoor) if there is a possibility of rain.
Army enters the weekend with an overall record of 18-9 and 6-1 in Patriot League Play. The Crusaders enter the weekend with a 1-14 overall record while going 0-6 in Patriot League play. The Leopards have an overall record of 6-15 and went 1-5 in league play. These records do not include the first-round matches on Thursday.

SCOUTING HOLY CROSS (1-14, 0-6 PL)
Holy Cross had a rough Patriot League season, with its last loss coming at the hands of Boston University, 7-0. The Crusaders have not scored a single point in Patriot play. Last year during the Patriot League Tournament, Holy Cross faced Lafayette in the first round, but fell 4-2. They were able to win points from Michael Varda at the No. 3 flight and Jimmy Ye in the No. 4 position.
SCOUTING LAFAYETTE (6-15, 1-5 PL)
The Leopards closed out the regular season with a 6-1 loss at Villanova. Lafayette's Mason Keel was the lone athlete to secure a victory, winning 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 flight. Last year at the Patriot League Tournament, Lafayette brought down Holy Cross 4-2 in the first round before falling to Navy 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This will be the fourth time in five years that Army has been named the No. 1 seed of the tournament. Last year, the Black Knights came into the tournament as the No. 2 seed. In their first match they dominated Loyola 4-0 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals the Cadets faced Bucknell and were able to pull away with a 4-2 victory. Then it was their academy rival Navy in the tournament finals. It was a close match, but Army was able to pull away with a 4-3 win. The Black Knights will be returning three of the Cadets that won last year including, Nguyen, Riechmann and Mitchell.
UP NEXT: The winner of #1 Army's quarterfinal match will take on the winner of #4 Boston U. and #5 Colgate's match which will take place at 10:30 a.m., on Friday. The semifinal match will take place at 10 a.m., on Saturday. The winner of the semifinal match will face off against the winner of the lower bracket which includes #3 Lehigh, #6 Bucknell, #2 Navy and #7 Loyola. The championship match will be at 1 p.m., on Sunday.

LAST TIME OUT
- The Black Knights suffered a heart breaking 4-1 loss to Navy on senior day.
- Michael Nguyen and Grant Riechmann were the lone cadets to win their doubles match. They collected a 6-3 victory at the No. 1 doubles flight.
- In singles competition Nguyen dominated at the No. 1 position with a quick 6-1, 6-2 straight set victory.
- The match was sealed at the No. 4 flight were David Mitchell won the first set 6-4. Mitchell eventually would fall to Navy's Gabriel Pilones 7-5, 6-1 to lose the point.
