April 11, 2017 | Softball, Women's Tennis
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army Athletic Association has named Melanie Allen and Renee Poirier its co-Athletes of the Week following their performances last week.
Allen is a member of the women's tennis team, while Poirier is on the softball team.
In a week that saw Army go 18-3 in competitions, Allen and Poirier provided standout performances for the Black Knights in key situations.
Allen guided the Black Knights to a 5-2 victory over service-academy rival Navy on Saturday with a pair of wins in the No. 1 singles and doubles spots. She was one of three Cadets to earn victories in both facets against the Mids with a 7-5, 6-3 decision in singles and a 6-1 win in doubles with her partner, Nancy Porter. Allen's singles victory clinched the Star for Army to bring the 2016-17 Army-Navy Star Series presented by USAA to 11-9.
Poirier was dominant in the circle for Army throughout the week, going 3-0 with three complete games. The highlight of the week was a no-hitter in the series finale at Lafayette, in which the Plainville, Mass., native allowed only two base runners. It was Poirier's second no-no of the season to go along with her 8-0, five-inning affair against Columbia on Feb. 24.
Overall, Poirier allowed just four hits and six walks in 21.0 innings of work, while striking out 14 batters. The sophomore right-hander lowered her ERA to 1.96, the best in the Patriot League.
The women's tennis team returns to action Tuesday at Rhode Island for a 3 p.m., match, while the softball team resumes play Wednesday at Fairfield. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
