March 02, 2017 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – During a luncheon on Wednesday afternoon the Army West Point men's soccer team was recognized for numerous academic achievements during the fall semester.
Â
The program's head officer representative, Col. Joe Hanus ran the ceremony but was joined by head coach Russell Payne and his staff.
Â
"Our men's soccer team's recognition ceremony for academic and military achievements is another opportunity for the program to celebrate excellence in all areas," Payne said. "It's also another chance to reaffirm our positive team culture from plebes to firsties".
Â
The first honor of the day went to junior Marcos Arroyo, who received the gold star with a wreath after earning the Superintendent Award for Excellence. That praise is given to those who rank in the top five percent of their class.
Â
Arroyo was again acknowledged with the Distinguished Cadet Award, earning a gold star for that achievement. He was joined by Gbenga Olaolorun (manager) and Christian Clark.
Â
An impressive 13 cadet-athletes were then praised for their military program excellence.
Â
The next award handed out was the Dean's List. Cadets must earn a grade point averaging of 3.0 or higher in order to receive this honor. 10 Black Knights heard their name called out and each were given a certificate of acknowledgement.
Â
10 were then praised for scoring above a 290 on their Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), while Arroyo and Denys Villatoro were recognized for completing the Indoor Obstacle Course Test (IOCT) in under 2:38. Arroyo notched a time of 2:20, while Villatoro crossed in 2:32.
Â
Ibrahim Seye earned the Most Improved Academic GPA Award, while Arroyo, Clark, Grayson Naquin, and Trase Stapley were commended for making the Patriot League Fall Academic Honor Roll with a 3.2 GPA or higher.
