Nick Honored as Sportsman of the Year
March 16, 2017 | Hockey
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior captain Ryan Nick of the Army West Point hockey team has been named the Individual Sportsmanship Award winner, announced at the Atlantic Hockey Championship Banquet Thursday night.
Â
"Ryan is very deserving of this award," said head coach Brian Riley. "Having taken just two penalties this season is quite an accomplishment considering how hard Ryan plays the game. When you think about it, he plays the game the right way, which is a testament to his character. He competes extremely hard every shift and is respected by the league's coaches and officials because of his sportsmanship."
Â
Nick is the second Black Knight to claim the individual sportsmanship honor in program history. Chris Garceau was also a recipient in 2005.
Â
The Plymouth, Mich., native has led the team on and off the ice this season with captain's badge on his chest. Nick has appeared in 34 games this season and has only been charged with two penalties for four minutes with the latest coming in the quarterfinals. He is second on the team with 49 blocks and is one of two Cadets who have scored on the power play, in a shorthanded situation and a game winner.
Â
Army will face Air Force in the Atlantic Hockey semifinals Friday night at the Blue Cross Arena. The puck will drop at approximately 8:05 p.m.
