Poirier’s No-Hitter Carries Army Past Columbia

Madeira Beach, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team cruised to its second shutout victory of the day as sophomore pitcher Renee Poirier tossed the first no-hitter of her career in an 8-0 victory over Columbia in five innings on Friday afternoon.
The Black Knights jumped to 3-4 on the year, while the Bears fell to 0-1.

- Army improve to 2-6 in the all-time series against Columbia.
- Today was the first time that the Black Knights posted back-to-back shutout victories since the first round of the 2013 Patriot League Tournament at Lehigh when they won 4-0 and 5-0.
- Sophomore Renee Poirier tossed her first-career no-hitter in the victory.
- Poirier's no-hitter is the first for Army since senior Caroline Smith did so against Hartford on May 3.
- This was Poirier's second win of the season.
- The Plainville, Mass., native recorded her first career hit in a multi-hit effort that included a double.
- Army posted season bests in hits (nine) and runs (eight), RBI (six) doubles (three) and extra base hits (three).
- This was the second time this season that the Black Knights have not committed an error, along with a clean defensive sheet against UT Martin on Feb. 11.
- Senior Alee Rashenskas recorded her first three-hit game of the season and second for Army, joining freshman Lacey Swafford.
- Swafford has tallied a hit in each of the last six games.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights got out to an early lead and never look back as they cruised to an 8-0 win in five innings.
- Nena Riccoboni hit a sacrifice fly that scored Rashenskas in the first inning to open the scoring for Army.
- After hitting a batter in the first inning, Poirier was dialed in, shutting down the Bears in the second and fourth innings.
- Army got back on the board in the third inning as a pair of errors resulted in two runs for the Black Knights.
- Rashenskas recorded her first of two RBI on the day with a single that scored Amelia Trotter.
- She would be driven in on a Riccoboni single through the right side to extend the lead to three runs.
- The Cadets piled on four more runs in the fourth, starting with back-to-back one-out hits from Ashley Yoo and Poirier.
- Trotter drove in Yoo on a fielder's choice, advancing Poirier to third base.
- Swafford knocked in both Poirier and Trotter with a double to left field to make it a six-run game.
- Rashenskas added a single to right before Swafford scored on an error by the catcher.
- Madison Cole doubled to begin the fifth inning, advancing to third on an error.
- Poirier closed out her stellar performance with an RBI single to end the game, scoring pinch-runner Michaela Hoover.
