Black Knights Cruise Past VMI

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's lacrosse team opened its home slate Monday with a 20-5 win over VMI at Michie Stadium.
The Black Knights (2-1) saw sophomore Nate Jones tie a career high with five goals, while David Symmes, Ted Glesener, Austin Colvin and Jeremy Angle, each had two tallies in the win. AJ Barretto got the victory in net and made six saves in 30 minutes of action. Cole Johnson added a goal and two assists for three points and leads the Black Knights with 11 points in three games.
The Keydets (0-1) were led by Brad Nardella with two goals, while Wesley Sanders, Nick Dodd and Hunter Duford had scores as well.

- This was Army's ninth-straight win over the Keydets, with the Cadets having never lost to VMI.
- The Black Knights have scored 20 or more goals in the last three meetings against VMI.
- The eight goals in the first quarter were the most this season in a frame.
- Nate Jones joins Cole Johnson with a five-goal game this year as Johnson had one on Saturday at Rutgers.
- Johnson had a goal and two assists for three points and has at least three points in all three games this year.
- Army had four different face-off specialists see action today. Daniel Grabher was 12-of-14, while Robby Woodings had a good second half with six wins in seven attempts. Jon LaMonica made his first appearance at the X and won two draws.
- All 50 players suited up got into the game.
- Angle, Matt Manown, and Tim Langerhans scored their first collegiate goal today.
- The 20 goals scored were the most for Army since the VMI game last year, when the Black Knights scored 22 in early February.
- Army has now won three-straight home openers.
- Jones had three of the first four goals in the opening four minutes and Army never looked back.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army came out on fire in the first four minutes with Jones earning the hat trick and Conor Glancy adding his first of the season to put the Black Knights up 4-0.
- The scoring continued until the end of the opening quarter as Army put eight more on the board in the first 15 minutes. Langerhans added his first career tally, while Austin Colvin, Ted Glesener and David Symmes also found the back of the net.
- VMI stopped the eight-goal run with its first of the day coming from Hunter Duford at the 11:08 mark of the second quarter.
- Grabher then won the ensuing face off and went the distance for his second of the year to push the lead back to eight goals at 9-1.
- Sanders fired back for the visitors with his first of the year coming with 5:44 left in the first half. Army answered with three in a row to make it 12-2. Danny DeSanti scored his first of the year and fourth of his career, followed by goals from Johnson and Glesener.
- Nardella netted his first of two on the day with 1:17 left in the third quarter and then Symmes recorded his second goal to give Army a commanding 13-3 lead going into the final frame.
- Jones got back on the scoreboard with two more to start the fourth quarter. The Black Knights then outscored the Keydets, 5-2 in the final nine minutes to come away with the 20-5 win. Colvin, Manown, Angle and Avery Littlejohn all had goals down the stretch for the Cadets.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights face their toughest test of the season so far with a visit to the Carrier Dome on Saturday at 12 p.m. as Army travels to sixth-ranked Syracuse.
