DIRECTOR OF TRACK AND FIELD/ CROSS COUNTRY MIKE SMITH'S COMMENTS:
"We came up a little bit short of our goal today. But, the reality is that the people we brought scored points, just not enough. That happens sometimes when a team is young. We needed more wins and fewer sixth-, seventh- and eighth-place finishes. The guys understand that and we have the talent to improve when we head outdoors.
"Having said that, we did have some great moments. We opened the scoring with a one, two sweep in the mile from Touchton and Smith. Touchton's performance was expected but, Smith is just a plebe so his outing was remarkable really. I don't know many first-years that have run the mile at the academy as well as him. Sims was also special today. He was the favorite in the 60 meters and that may be a difficult spot to be in, but he ran his race and won handily. Then he came back and did a nice job in the triple jump. I thought Moddox was pretty special today as well. His 500-meter time is number two all-time at Army. This is a significant accomplishment, but for him to do it as a plebe is outstanding.
"Bares won the pole vault easily and we have come to expect that, but it is never easy to win so he should be commended for that. We competed really well, we had people step up, we met the challenges and the guys never gave up. In the end, we just did not have enough big point scorers. We are ahead of schedule. I really thought it would take another year for us to be in the hunt for a championship, but we are there now and we have to embrace the challenge and get back to work. There can be no let up."
