Hornick, Burns Collect Weekly League Honors
February 13, 2017 | Women's Lacrosse
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Junior attacker Rachel Hornick and freshman goalie Maddie Burns have each been recognized by the Patriot League for their outstanding performances in Saturday's victory over Marist.
Hornick was named the Patriot League Attacker of the Week after a seven goal performance. The Calvert, Md., native netted Army's first four goals of the game and added three more in the contest for a career-high.
"Rachel has really come into her own on the offensive side of the ball for us this year, said Noto Family head women's lacrosse coach Kristen Skiera. "She has worked hard to diversify her game and be a threat both with and without the ball. Her teammates and coaches trust in her ability to make things happen out on the field."
The seven goals were also a program record for a single-game performance. Hornick scored seven goals on nine shots and added a ground ball and caused turnover.
Burns received rookie of the week honors after entering the net for the final 42 minutes of the game to secure the victory for the Black Knights.
"Maddie really played with a lot of grit and came up with some huge saves in her first minutes of collegiate lacrosse," said Skiera. "Her ability to make big stops helped fuel the defensive confidence and her clearing also helped fuel our offense off the transition. She is a very mature, even-keeled and talented young player for us."
The Ridgefield, Conn., native recorded eight saves in the game off 23 shots faced. Burns led the team with five groundballs in her first collegiate appearance.
"We are so proud that our team was able to tough this close game out and find a way to win against a strong opponent," added Skiera. "We made huge strides in our draw play and clearing. Our returning players showed a lot of poise and confidence and our freshmen also stepped up fearlessly. The game certainly opened our eyes to areas we need to improve upon, but it is always better to learn these lessons after a hard earned win than a loss."
Army travels to Manhattan next Saturday for a 3 p.m. game against the Jaspers.
