THIS WEEK: TILT AT CANISIUS
- The teams have met twice already this season with the Cadets having the upper hand with two victories.
- Since then, the Griffins have catapulted to rank first in AHA standings and are riding a six-game winning streak.
- Both contests this weekend will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable Television across New York State with Friday night's game starting at 7:35 p.m., and Saturday's puck dropping at 4:05 p.m.
LAST WEEK: AIR FORCE TAKES TWO
- The Black Knights competed at Air Force last weekend where they fought to 3-1 and 3-2 deficits.
- In Friday's game, the Falcons went up 1-0 before Army tied things up with a goal by Ian Mansfield. However, Air Force responded with two more to clinch the game.
- The Black Knights were on the board first Saturday night when Blake Box stole the puck and netted his second of the year against the Falcons. Air Force tallied three-straight goals before Army sparked its comeback.
- With two minutes remaining in the game, Dalton MacAfee blasted a hard shot on goal with 2:00 to go that redirected to Conor Andrle on the outside.
- He passed it quickly towards Michael Wilson who made contact and tapped the puck over the goalline. The Black Knights snagged a power play opportunity to close out the game, but Air Force came away victorious.
PARKER GAHOBEY
- Senior goaltender Parker Gahagen has been announced as a nominee for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award.
- This season he tallied five shutouts to rank him first in the nation in that category. The five also place him second in Army's single-season lore, and ties him for first all-time in Atlantic Hockey history.
- Gahagen played in his 100th career game this past weekend and boasts a total of 2,859 career saves, just 154 shy of the Academy record.
- He has posted nine shutouts to tie him for second in program history and has the third best goals against average at 2.40. Fans can vote once a day, every day at hobeybaker.com/vote.
RACE TO THE TOP
- The Black Knights are one of multiple teams vying for the top spots in Atlantic Hockey standings.
- The Griffins are tops in the league with 30 points, followed closely by Air Force (28). Robert Morris has 24 points, while Army boasts 23 to tie with Mercyhurst.
- RIT, Holy Cross and Bentley have also cracked the 20- point mark so far this season.
THE LAST MEETING
- Army and Canisius met for two games in the middle of November with the Black Knights defeating the Griffins by scores of 3-0 and 5-2.
- In Friday's shutout, Army held Canisius to 14 shots and saw Tipper Higgins, Nick DeCenzo and Dominic Franco net their first goals of the season.
- In Saturday's contest, the Black Knights came out with four-straight goals before the Griffs found the back of the net for the first time that weekend. Franco and Higgins scored again for the Cadets, while Conor Andrle, Dalton MacAfee and Taylor Maruya were also on the scoresheet.
- Gahagen walked away from the weekend with 46 saves and two goals against, both on the power play.
SCOUTING CANISIUS
- The Griffins posted an outstanding 7-1-2 record in the month of January with sweeps over AIC (6-1, 4-2) and RIT (6-1, 3-1).
- Canisius earned a win over the Falcons (4-1) before tying them (2-2 OT) in Colorado Springs the following night.
- After the run, goaltender Charles Williams leads the nation in save percentage (.946) and ranks sixth nationally in goals against average (1.87), just shy of Gahagen's 1.84.
- The Griffs are paced offensively by Dylan McLaughlin and Ryan Schmelzer who have recorded 22 and 21 points, respectively. McLaughlin leads the team in goals with 10 and has 12 assists along with Schmelzer.
