On Point: Sign of Brotherhood
December 07, 2017 | Football
On Point highlights the tremendous personal stories our coaches and cadet-athletes have to share on a weekly basis. Each week, a new feature story will be prominently highlighted on GoArmyWestPoint.com. The features will include multi-media pieces and written pieces by the Army West Point athletic communications staff.
An old piece of plywood, painted white with small black letters on it. Nothing special.
It's screwed to the wall outside the football locker room in a spot that most people would never see. But the location doesn't matter. The words that are painted on it are much more significant.
The words are simple and come from an old Scottish ballad by Sir Andrew Barton.
Fight on, my men.
I am hurt, but I am not slain;
I'll lay me down and bleed awhile.
And then I'll rise and fight again.
This ballad has been used by many football teams over the years, but Army has a special attachment to it.
