Game Notes: Army Heads to Armed Forces Bowl

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point football team is heading to Fort Worth, Texas, this week to face San Diego State in the Armed Forces Bowl on Saturday.Â
The bowl game is set for a 2:30 p.m. Central kickoff on ESPN and the Army Sports Network.Â

THE OPENING KICKOFF
• Army makes its seventh bowl appearance in program history with its second visit to the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
• The Black Knights are looking to reach double-digit victories for the first time since 1996 and only the second time in school history.
• The 2017 team is the 10th squad to reach nine wins in a season in academy history.
• The Black Knights are headed to back-to-back bowls for the first time since the 1984 and 1985 seasons when they went to the Cherry and Peach Bowl under head coach Jim Young.
• San Diego State comes into the bowl game with a 10-2 mark and winners of its last four games, scoring 28 or more points in each contest.
• The Aztecs have beaten nationally-ranked Stanford and Pac-12 foe Arizona State this season and their lone losses have been to Boise State and Fresno State. They are unbeaten on the road this season.
ARMY-SAN DIEGO STATE HISTORY
• The series between these two schools is a short one as they have only played each other twice before the Armed Forces Bowl.
• The Aztecs have won both previous meetings at West Point and in California.
• In 2011 at West Point, San Diego State won a close game at 23-20 and then the next year, the Aztecs ran away with a 42-7 victory.
ABOUT THE AZTECS
• San Diego State enters the bowl game with a four-game winning streak and a 10-2 overall record.
• The Aztecs own two wins over Pac-12 schools, including nationally-ranked Stanford in September.
• SDSU can put points on the board as the Aztecs are averaging 30 points per game.
• The ground game for SDSU is its strong point, rushing for an average of 252.2 yards per game and 29 touchdowns on the ground.
• It all starts with Rashaad Penny, who landed on eight different First Team All-American teams and was fifth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy.
• Penny leads the Football Bowl Subdivision in total rushing yards at 2,027 and rushing yards per game at 168.9. He is also tops in the nation in all-purpose yards per game at 224.8.
• The defense is allowing only 18 points per game and is stingy against the run with an average of 110.4 yards given up per contest.
WINNING THE CIC
• The Black Knights hoisted the Commander in Chief's trophy on a snowy field at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Dec. 9.
• Army won the CIC by outscoring Air Force and Navy by a 35-13 score, including a shutout against the Falcons on Nov. 4, ending a 306-game scoring streak by Air Force.
• The Black Knights also took home the trophy by throwing just one pass in the two games. The play breakdown was 108 rushes to only one pass, which was a completion to Calen Holt against Navy.
• Army dominated at Air Force with 392 yards of total offense to only 190 for the Falcons. Navy outgained Army 296-241 on Dec. 9.
• For the second year in a row, Army found itself behind Navy entering the fourth quarter, but Bradshaw led the Black Knights on a gamewinning drive.
• He has scored the winning touchdown in the last two Army-Navy games as well.
GOING BOWLING
• The Black Knights will face San Diego State in Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 23.
• Army is playing in back-to-back bowl games for the first time since the 1984 and 1985 seasons.
• The Black Knights were the first team in FBS to accept a bowl bid in 2017.
• This is the second trip to the Armed Forces Bowl for the Black Knights as they defeated SMU back in 2010.
BRADSHAW! BRADSHAW!
• Quarterback Ahmad Bradshaw became Army's all-time single-season rusher thanks to 244 yards on 27 carries in the loss at North Texas.
• The Chicago native has 1,566 rushing yards on the season, and the all-time single-season rushing record between the three FBS service academies is in reach as well.
• Bradshaw ran for a career high 265 yards in the win over Air Force and averaged an impressive 11.5 yards per carry.
• The yardage was the eighth-most overall for a single game in 2017 and his 244 against North Texas is the 17th most.
• Bradshaw is one of only four players in FBS football this season to have 240 or more rushing yards in two games.
• Bradshaw is currently fifth in the country in rushing yards with 1,566 total this season and is sixth in the nation in yards per carry at 7.46. He is seventh in the country in rushing yards per game at 130.5.
• He became the first player to reach 1,000 yards in a season since Larry Dixon in 2014, and the 15th player all-time to reach the milestone.
