November 27, 2017 | Sprint Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior co-captain Curtis Jerzerick was named the Most Valuable Player of the Collegiate Sprint Football League (CSFL) as the league announced its postseason awards Monday afternoon.
Army earned a league-high 17 post season honors with nine first team selections, six second team honorees and one honorable mention.
The Black Knights had a historic season as they won the inaugural CSFL Championship game on Nov. 10 with a 10-0 decision over Penn. The win marked Army's 35th league title and 18th perfect season in program history. The Cadets notched eight wins for just the second time in their 61-year history, matching the total set by the 1983 squad.
Jerzerick became Army's first league MVP since Philip Choi ('16) in 2015. The Lewistown, Pa., native wreaked havoc on opposing offenses with 38 tackles (26 solo, 12 assisted), including 12.5 tackles for a loss of 66 yards and six sacks for a loss of 52 yards. He also blocked a field goal attempt and broke up two passes in addition to returning a fumble 13 yards for his second-career touchdown. Under Jerzerick's leadership, the Army defense was the only team in the league to allow fewer than 100 points on the season.
Along with Jerzerick, Keegan West, Ty Galyean, Zach Trainor, Jake Gigliotti, Desmond Young, Jake Marchillo, John Herrmann and Peter Davis collected All-CSFL First Team nods. Jerzerick and Galyean earned their third all-league selections, wihle West and Marchillo gathered their second postseason honors. Galyean is the only cadet-athlete who received first team recognition previously, having also done so last season.
West guided Army's offense from under center, ranking second in the CSFL in total offense (1,425 yards) and average passing yards per game (171.9). The West Point, N.Y., native competed 103-of-158 passes for 1,375 yards and tossed 15 touchdowns to just six interceptions. He also ran for 50 yards on 30 carries and scored three touchdowns with his legs. West threw for at least 200 yards three times and had five games with multiple touchdowns.
Galyean was a reliable option for West, hauling in a team-high 25 receptions for 319 yards and five touchdowns. The senior co-captain's best showing came on a seven-reception, 94-yard performance at Cornell in the regular season finale.
Trainor started all eight games for the Black Knights and blocked for the top offense in the CSFL. Army scored a league-high 364 points (45.5 per game) and posted 2,876 yards of total offense.
Gigliotti posted a breakout season after getting his shot at being the starting running back for the Black Knights, ranking first in the CSFL in touchdowns (11), second in scoring (66 points), third in rushing (63.1 yards per game) and fifth in all-purpose yards (97.2 per game). The Yorba Linda, Calif., native recorded personal bests in rushes (88), rushing yards (505), rushing touchdowns (10), receptions (18), receiving yards (188) and receiving touchdowns (1).
Young made an immediate impact in his first season for Army, documenting eight pass breakups that ranked second in the league and scored a touchdown on his first-career interception, returning the pick 50 yards in the team's 62-14 win at Mansfield. The Murrieta, Calif., native added 18 tackles (12 solo, 6 assisted), including 1.5 tackles for a loss of nine yards and assisting on a sack of four yards.
Marchillo has been a staple of the Army defense for the past four seasons, with his senior campaign being one of his best on the banks of the Hudson. The Clinton, Wis., native posted personal bests in tackles (33; 26 solo, 7 assisted), blocked a field goal attempt versus Navy for his second-career block, and recovered his first-career fumble. Marchillo scored his third-career touchdown on a blocked punt against Penn in the inaugural CSFL Championship game for the only touchdown of the contest. Marchillo added 5.5 tackles for a loss of 30 yards, including one sack for a loss of nine yards, and an interception in Army's first meeting with the Quakers.
Herrmann was the CSFL's top punter, leading the way in average yards per punt (37.2), total punting yards (1,376) and kicked the league's only punt of at least 70 yards with a 73-yarder in the annual Star Game against Navy. Of his 37 punts, Herrmann booted three over 50 yards, while placing 14 inside the opponent's 20. His busiest game came against the Mids when the Little Rock, Ark., native punted seven times for 326 yards (46.6 avg.) with five inside the 20.
Davis led the league in scoring in his first season with the Black Knights, posting 67 points on seven field goals and 46 PATs. The Danville, Calif., native boasted a CSFL-best 70% success rate by going 7-for-10 on field goal attempts. He connected on a season-long 44-yard field goal in Army's 52-12 win against Chestnut Hill. His best performance came at Mansfield when we was 2-for-3 on field goals and converted all eight PATs.
Clayton Carter, Jesse Helms, Tanner Andrews, Nathan Lopez, Connor Long and James Scroggins were Army's representatives on the All-CSFL Second Team. Andrews and Lopez were both named to a postseason all-league team for the third time in their careers, while Helms and Scroggins collected their second honors. Andrews and Helms were the only members of the group that previously received second team accolades.
Carter finished second on the Black Knights with 23 catches and was third in receiving yards (283) and receiving touchdowns (4), all of which were single-season career highs. The Indianapolis, Ind., native's best showing came in the annual Star Game when he hauled in four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown.
Helms started all eight games for the Black Knights and blocked for the top offense in the CSFL. Army scored a league-high 364 points (45.5 per game) and posted 2,876 yards of total offense.
Andrews was once again a key piece in the Army secondary, tying for third in the league with three interceptions and sixth in pass breakups with six. The Elburn, Ill., native added 13 tackles (12 solo, 1 assisted) with one sack for a loss of two yards. He recorded his fourth-career multi-interception game with two picks in the regular season finale at Cornell.
Lopez was one of two cadet-athletes to finish the season with at least 40 tackles and added 8.5 tackles for a loss of 28 yards, including 2.5 sacks for 15 yards. The West Chicago, Ill., native added an interception and four pass breakups, as well as forcing and recovering a fumble.
Long was among the CSFL's top defensive players in his second year, leading the league in tackles for loss (18.0) and finishing second in sacks (9.5). The Mechanicsburg, Pa., native documented 37 tackles (29 solo, 8 assisted) and scored a safety against Navy in the team's 40-6 victory in the annual Star Game.
Scroggins led the Black Knights with 42 tackles (30 solo, 12 assisted) while ranking third in the CSFL in sacks (8.5) and tying for third with two fumble recoveries. The West Palm Beach, Fla., native finished fourth in the league with 15.0 tackles for a loss of 75 yards, while also breaking up a pass, forcing a fumble and blocking a kick against Penn in the inaugural CSFL Championship game.
