Black Knights Capture Victory in Season Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – With four scorers reaching double-figures, the Army West Point women's basketball team was able to claim a 73-61 victory over Binghamton to open the 2017-18 campaign on Friday night at Christl Arena.
With the win, Army moved to 1-0 to start the season, while Binghamton fell to 0-1.
The starting lineup gave the Black Knights a ton of production as the five starters accounted for 60 of the team's 73 points. Daizjah Morris led all scorers in the game with 23 points, while her sister and fellow classmate, Destinee finished with 15 points. Libby Tacka and Madison Hovren added 11 points apiece.
One of the key's to the Black Knights' win, was their ability to knock down the shot from long range. The Cadets connected on 7-of-11 (63.6%) attempts from beyond-the-arc.  Â

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- As a team, the Black Knights shot 47.4 percent from the field and outrebounded the Bearcats, 44-31.
- Morris' 23 points was a new career best and just the second time in her career that she eclipsed the 20-point mark.
- Her nine made shots on 9-of-12 shooting was a career-high.
- Hovren contributed with her 17th career double-double after compiling 10 boards to go along with her 11 points.
- Tacka's 11 points tied her career best, also setting a new benchmark in assists with six to go along with five boards.
- Gabby White made her collegiate debut for the Black Knights, collecting one rebound and dishing out a single assist.
- The Black Knights successfully capitalized off the Binghamton turnovers, accumulating 24 points off the Bearcats' miscues.Â
- Army opened its season with a win for the third consecutive year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Black Knights trailed 9-6 after Alyssa James of Binghamton scored, but Army responded with an 11-5 run that spanned the final six minutes of the opening quarter to go ahead 17-14. Hovren and Daizjah Morris combined for eight points.
- Early in the second quarter, the Cadets found themselves behind by two, 19-17. A 3-pointer by Tacka, followed by a fastbreak score by Morris and a three by her sister put the Black Knights up by six, 25-19.
- After a score to halt the 8-0 spurt, Army went on the attack again and Tacka put in five unanswered points. The Morris twins would go on to add seven additional points to make it a 20-4 run and extend the advantage to 14, 37-23.
- Binghamton trimmed the deficit back to single digits after seniors Imani Watkins and Alyssa James combined for nine points in the final two minutes of action in the opening half.
- Following an early basket by Tacka to start the new half, Binghamton gained some momentum and only trailed by two, 43-41. However, the Black Knights' 14-2 run that featured eight points by Destinee Morris pushed the lead back to 14.
- The two squads went back and forth to open the final quarter of play, but following a lull for just over two minutes, Daizjah Morris put in back-to-back buckets to make it a 12-point advantage. The Bearcats would get as close as nine points, before Army was able to ice the game and seal the 73-61 victory.
