Army Honored with Postseason Awards
October 29, 2017 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Black Knights were honored with two postseason awards at the Patriot League Championships Saturday afternoon.
Army West Point Track and Field and Cross Country Head Coach Mike Smith was named the Patriot League Coach of the Year.
Smith earns this honor after coming off a Patriot League Championship win for the men's cross country team, and a second place finish for the women. It was the first time since 2001 that the men and women finished one and two in their respective meets. The championship title was the eighth for Army, tying Navy for the most titles in League history.
This season Smith also led both his men's and women's teams to victory over service-academy rival Navy. The men's team broke a three-year Navy winning streak, while the women were able to snap Navy's six-year winning streak.
Smith is the first Army coach to win the award since Jerry Quiller in 2001.
Freshman Daniel Mazzei earned Rookie of the Meet honors. He is the first recipient of that award for Army since the award was established in 2004.
He had an impressive performance in his first championship meet, closing out the Army top-five spots in 15th, clocking a time of 24:52.25.
Mazzei has had an excellent first collegiate season, consistently finishing in the Army top-five spots. This is his second time winning this award, earning the same title after his performance at the Paul Short Invitational earlier this season
Next, Army will travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for the Northeast Regional Championships on Nov. 10th.
