Strong Second Period Pushes RIT Past Army

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team fell to RIT Friday night. The Black Knights came out to a 2-0 start after the first period before four goals by the Tigers in the second fueled RIT to win 5-4.  Â

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Dominic Franco continued his streak and has recorded a point in Army's last three contests.
- He also recorded an assist on the night for his sixth of the season.
- Also scoring for the Black Knights was Tipper Higgins, Michael Wilson and Tyler Pham.
- The line of Franco, Pham and Wilson have now produced a combined 22 points on the season.
- Wilson also notched an assist in the game along with Brendan Soucie, John Zimmerman, Ian Mansfield and Mason Krueger.
- Cole Bruns made 24 saves in the game for the Black Knights. Army outshot RIT 30-29.
HOW IT HAPPENED
PERIOD ONE (2-0 ARMY)
- Army started strong against the Tigers scoring seven minutes into the game.
- Pham brought the puck up into the zone and dumped it to Wilson low. Wilson then had a perfect drop pass which Pham connected with and drove home.
- With just two minutes left in the frame, Franco picked the puck from the Tigers' blueline and passed it up to Wilson who went top shelf.
- Bruns made a quick save on a fast release shot by RIT to finish the period with Army ahead 2-0.
PERIOD TWO (4-2 RIT)
- The Tigers had quite the showing in the second period netting four goals.
- RIT scored its first two two minutes apart to tie the game at 2-2 with 14:19 left in the stanza.
- The Tigers kept the pedal to the floor as they netted two more in the period one being a power play goal.
- Army went on the man advantage with 2:47 left, but had limited opportunities.
PERIOD THREE (5-4 RIT)
- The Black Knights fought back to start off the third with a goal 3:18 in. After quick movement from Mansfield and Krueger, the puck was loose in front and Higgins came in to score to make it a one goal game.
- RIT answered back five minutes later with a goal of their own. Bruns made two initial saves, but continuous shooting by the Tigers enabled the goal to pad their lead 5-3.
- Army kept its hopes alive when Franco scored with 00:26.8 remaining in the game to bring it within one again.
- Zimmerman swung the puck around to Soucie who fired it into the middle. The puck bounced off Franco into the back of the net to score.
TURNING POINT
- RIT's four goal second period was tonight's turning point. It erased the Black Knights' 2-0 lead and put them ahead by two goals.

- Army hosts RIT again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
