Hovren Tabbed League’s Preseason Player of Year
October 25, 2017 | Women's Basketball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The league announced on Wednesday that junior Madison Hovren of the Army West Point women's basketball team was selected as the Patriot League Preseason Player of the Year.
Hovren, who was a six-time league player of the week selection a season ago, leads a Black Knights' squad that shares the top spot in the Patriot League Preseason Poll with Bucknell. Each team received seven first-place votes.
The Black Knights return a strong core to tie defending champion Bucknell atop the preseason poll with 140 points. American finished closely behind in third place with 134 points and five first-place votes. Last season's league runner-up Navy tallied 119 points and the final first-place vote, while Boston University checked in at fifth, with 91 points. Holy Cross (81), Lehigh (64), Colgate (55), Loyola Maryland (54) and Lafayette (22) round out the preseason poll.
Head coach Dave Magarity, who is now in his 12th season leading the Black Knights, enters the year with the conference preseason player of the year who averaged 18.7 points, 10.2 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game just a season ago. He also returns the reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in Aliyah Murray, who compiled 8.9 points, 7.8 boards and 1.9 helpers per contest.
Army West Point will have experience on its side, returning eight players that averaged more than 10 minutes per game last season. All-defensive team selection Janae McNeal (9.6 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 3.6 apg) highlights a stout defense that allowed a league-low 57.5 points per game last season. Daizjah and Destinee Morris, along with Jess Lewis, give Magarity six players that averaged six points or more during the 2016-17 campaign.
The 2017-18 season begins on Nov. 10 for the Black Knights when they play host to Binghamton for a 7 p.m. tilt at Christl Arena.
Voting for the Patriot League women's basketball preseason poll, player of the year and all-League team was conducted by League head coaches and sports information directors, who were not permitted to vote for their own team or student-athletes.
