Army Takes Down Lehigh in Marathon Match

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After sticking out 14 set points in the fifth and final set, the Army West Point volleyball team took down Lehigh on the road Friday night. The final set was a 27-25 decision by the Black Knights who had two athletes produce over 20 points.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES

Carolyn Bockrath and Vanessa Wesley both produced over 20 points in Army's five-set victory.
Bockrath had 25.5 points on 23 kills and had a .537 hitting percentage, two blocks and an ace.
Welsey boasted a team-high seven blocks and 15 kills.
Courtney Horace notched 13 kills in the match and Allie Strong had 11.
Haven Bethune was one shy of her season-high in assists with 35. Nikki Lum added 24 in the match.
Ellie Petersen aided Army defensively with a career-high 19 digs. Maggie Petersen also stepped up for the Black Knights and had 15 digs. Lum (11) and Strong (10) also had double-digit dig performances in the match.
There were 30 tie scores in the entire match and 21 of them were during the fifth set.
The Black Knights led in kills (78-60), hitting percentage (.253-.231), blocks (9-4) and assists (67-60).

HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (25-22 Army)

The Black Knights were led by Horace and Bockrath who combined for 11 points.
Vanessa Wesley added four and a half and Strong had another four.
Army notched a .333 hitting percentage to Lehigh's .179 in the set.

SET TWO (25-19 Lehigh)

The set was close halfway through when the Black Knights trailed 16-14. However, the Mountain Hawks then went on a 9-5 run to close-out the set and to tie up the match 1-1.
The Mountain Hawks came away with a 15-10 kill advantage in the set.
Strong led the Cadets with three kills.

SET THREE (25-20 Army)

Once again the Black Knights flipped the switch on Lehigh and produced 14 kills and hit .216, while holding the Mountain Hawks to 10 kills and eight errors to hit .059.
Bockrath stood out during the set with six kills.
Wesley recorded two block assists to lead the Black Knights in the set.

SET FOUR (25-15 Lehigh)

Lehigh started strong right out of the gate for the fourth set and Army was not able to catch up.
E. Petersen had five digs in the set, while M. Petersen had three.
Lum boasted four assists on Army's nine kills.

SET FIVE (27-25 Army)

In a set that typically ends at the 15th point, Army and Lehigh pushed it to 27-25 with 14 match points throughout.
Bockrath produced seven kills, while Wesley had six and three solo blocks.
Bethune produced 11 assists for the Black Knights and Jaden Pickell notched a team-leading five digs.
The Cadets hit .375 in the final set.
