January 10, 2017 | Men's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army welcomes Colgate on Wednesday for a midweek Patriot League tilt.
That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip inside Christl Arena.
The Black Knights recently notched their first conference win of the season after a rousing 66-57 victory over Loyola on Sunday. Jordan Fox led the way for the sixth time this season with 14 points. John Emezie and Luke Morrison also chipped in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively. The youthful Black Knights now sit with a 7-9 overall mark in head coach Jimmy Allen's opening season.
For Colgate, the Raiders have struggled a little bit as they sit with an overall record of 3-14. They also post a 1-3 Patriot League mark heading into Wednesday's contest with their lone victory an 85-75 win at Lafayette in the conference opener. The other two Raider victories were against rival Cornell and division III Union. Colgate has played some pretty tough competition though as it kicked off its season at No. 19/17 Syracuse, while making trips to Penn State and No. 25/24 Notre Dame.

ABOUT THE RAIDERS
In Colgate's last game at Navy, three players reached double-digit scoring with Tom Rivard's game and season-high 21 points leading the way. Rookie Will Rayman and senior Sean O'Brien also tallied 12 and 11 points, respectively in the loss. Rivard led the team on the boards as well, pulling down eight rebounds to go along with his team-high three steals. The Raiders finished the game outshooting the Mids, converting on 20 of their 45 attempts for 44.4 percent shooting.
Leading the team overall is Rayman, who is averaging 15.0 points per game (7th in league). O'Brien is a close second with 12.1 points per outing, while Jordan Swopshire is reeling in 9.4 points per contest. Sophomore Malcom Regisford is tops on the team in rebounding with 7.6 boards per game. Rayman and Swopshire are also chipping in 4.6 and 4.2 rebounds per outing, respectively. O'Brien's 4.5 assists per contest is sixth in the conference, while he sits tops in the league in 3-point field goal percentage with a mark of .457 percent (37-of-81). O'Brien and Swopshire are averaging 2.2 and 2.1 treys per game, which are good for fifth and ninth in the conference.
LAST TIME OUT
Army led wire-to-wire Sunday afternoon to register its first Patriot League victory of the early season after defeating a strong Loyola team, 66-57. The Black Knights showcased solid defense in the opening period, holding the Greyhounds to just 19 points on 30.8 percent shooting. Army held a slim 7-6 advantage just five minutes into the contest. The Black Knights added on using a 13-0 run to break the game open at 20-6. Army pushed its advantage to the largest of the game at 37-21 early in the second period but Loyola would not go away. The Greyhounds slowly started to chip away at the deficit, pulling within 45-40 with 11:01 left on the clock. Unfortunately, that would be as close as the visitors would come as the Cadets answered with a 7-2 run to make it a 52-42 ballgame with less than nine minutes to play. The Black Knights then maintained that edge for the remainder of the contest to secure their seventh victory of the year.
Three cadet-athletes registered double digits with Jordan Fox's 14 points leading the way. Joining Fox in twin figures was John Emezie and Luke Morrison, who posted 13 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Mac Hoffman was one rebound shy of earning his third career double figure rebounding night. Rookie Matt Wilson and senior Kennedy Edwards were a close second with eight rebounds each.
Colgate's early-game troubles continued and the Raiders dropped a 67-55 decision to Navy on Sunday afternoon. The Raiders fell behind 13-0 just one game after opening in a 17-0 hole against Holy Cross. But just as they did Thursday against the Crusaders, Colgate made a game of it. The Raiders trailed 29-17 early in the second half when Sean O'Brien got loose for eight straight points on a layup and back-to-back 3-pointers. The Raiders were within 29-25 with 17:18 remaining. That's when Navy then responded with a 21-4 run over the next 8:40, capped by a personal 9-0 run from Midshipmen forward George Kiernan that made it 50-29. The Raiders rallied again late but never could pull closer than nine points on three occasions.
Tom Rivard led all scorers with a season-high 21 points, and he matched his season best with eight rebounds. Will Rayman added 12 points and O'Brien 11. Navy got 14 points apiece from Tom Lacey, Hasan Abdullah and Shawn Anderson.
A WIN OVER COLGATE WOULD...
Hand Army its eighth win of the season and make it three-straight victories over the Raiders. It would also hand the Cadets their second win of the early Patriot League season, pulling them to 2-3.
ARMY VS. PATRIOT LEAGUE TEAMS
The Black Knights are 264-378 all-time against current members of the Patriot League. Of the nine other schools in the league, Army has faced Navy (125 times), Colgate (119 times) and Lehigh (105 times) the most. Army leads three series against Patriot League schools in Colgate (61-58), Lehigh (63-42), and Loyola (5-3). The Cadets have also competed against American (10-26), Boston University (8-14), Bucknell (21-52), Holy Cross (21-62), Lafayette (27-44) and Navy (48-77).
EFFICIENCY IS KEY
Strong shooting and the ability to spread the ball around are both keys to Army's success. The Black Knights' 1.1 assist-to-turnover ratio is second the Patriot League, while their 16.0 assists per game and 44.2 field goal percentage rank second and fifth, respectively. With no one truly dominating the ball offensively, it is helping to create open looks for shooters on the outside, where the Cadets are second in the conference with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game. That mark also has them 29th in the NCAA.
NEXT UP
Army heads back on the road for a contest at American on Saturday. That game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip in Bender Arena. The Eagles are at Boston U. on Wednesday before hosting the Black Knights three days later. American currently sits with a 4-11 overall record to go along with its 1-3 conference mark heading in Wednesday's game.
