January 31, 2017 | Wrestling
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior co-captain Russ Parsons of the Army West Point wrestling team was recognized as the AAA Athlete of the Week following his second individual title at the All-Academy Championships on Sunday.
Parsons posted a 3-0 record with a technical fall and a major decision, outscoring his opponents 39-4 on the day. The Clinton, N.J., native defeated Coast Guard's Chris Sullivan in the quarterfinals by tech. fall, 18-0, for his 10th bonus-point victory on the season. He then edged Alex Mossing of Air Force, 9-4, to advance to his third-consecutive All-Academy Championships final. The win over Mossing was the 75th of Parsons's career. In the finals, he was pitted against VMI's Neal Richards and captured the title with a 12-0 major decision.
Parsons is now 21-3 in his senior campaign (7-1 in duals), with 11 bonus-point wins on one fall, six tech. falls and four major decisions. He ranks second on the team in overall wins, dual wins and bonus-point wins, while being tied for the team lead in tech. falls. Parsons is currently riding an eight-match winning streak with a pin, tech. fall and major decision during that time.
This is the third time the Army Athletic Association has named Parsons its Athlete of the Week for the 2016-17 season. He first earned the nod on Nov. 22, when he went 5-0 in California in a dual against Cal Poly before winning CSU Bakersfield's Roadrunner Open. Parsons also tallied the accolade on Jan. 10, when he culminated a perfect 3-0 record at the American Duals.
It was the fourth time a wrestler has been recognized this season and the second-consecutive week after Austin Harry garnered the honors seven days ago following a 2-0 performance against Hofstra and Binghamton.
The Black Knights will have a week off before traveling to Lehigh on Feb. 10 for an EIWA matchup at 7 p.m.
