Black Knights Travel to Boston U. On Wednesday
January 24, 2017 | Men's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Black Knights head on the road Wednesday for a midweek tilt with Boston University.
Â
That contest is slated for a 7 p.m. tip in Boston U.'s Case Gym and will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
Â
Army is coming off a devastating loss to archrival Navy in overtime during its last outing on Saturday. In a very back-and-forth game, Army watched a slim six-point lead midway through the second half fade into a Navy 10-point edge with 1:16 remaining on the clock. The Black Knights didn't waiver though using a 15-5 run over the final 36 seconds to send the contest into overtime. What was even more impressive was that Army scored eight-straight points and forced two turnovers in the last 19 seconds to cut the Mids deficit to 74-73 with six seconds remaining. Unfortunately, the Cadets weren't able to complete the full comeback in the extra period and Navy won its fifth-straight contest.
Â
The Terriers are on a little bit of a skid after starting Patriot League play 5-0. Since its last win against American on Jan. 11, Boston U. has dropped three straight to Loyola, Colgate and Bucknell. The Terriers still remain front runners in the league standings sitting in a four-way tie for second with Lehigh, Holy Cross, and Navy after holding a conference mark of 5-3.

ABOUT THE TERRIERS
In Boston U.'s last outing at Bucknell, two Terriers reached double digits with senior Justin Alston's 20 points leading the way. Sophomore Kyle Foreman chipped in 11 points and added a team-best seven assists and three steals to close out the Terrier top performers. Junior Nick Havener pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while Alston registered six to lead Boston U. on the boards.
On the year, senior Eric Fanning is posting 13.7 points per game, while Alston and Cedric Hankerson are averaging double-figure scoring as well with 11.5 and 11.1 points per outing, respectively. Fanning and Alston lead the team with 6.2 rebounds per contest. Foreman is third in the league in assists and steals with 5.0 and 1.9 per game, respectively. Hankerson is posting a league-best 2.7 makes per outing from behind-the-arc, while his .347 shooting percentage from 3-point range has him fourth.

LAST TIME OUT
Army couldn't complete the full comeback on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 96-80 decision to service-academy rival Navy in overtime. The Black Knights used a 15-5 run over the final 36 seconds to send the contest into overtime. What was even more impressive was that Army scored eight-straight points and forced two turnovers in the last 19 seconds to cut the Mids deficit to 74-73 with six seconds remaining. Navy's Shawn Anderson then made 1-of-2 free throws with four seconds left to make it a 75-73 ballgame. But on the ensuing play, Tommy Funk grabbed a quick pass from Jordan Fox and converted on a layup with no time remaining to stun the Mids and send Christl Arena into a frenzy. Unfortunately, Navy outscored Army 21-5 in the extra period to hold on to the victory, marking five-straight wins for the Mids.
Kennedy Edwards notched a season-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor. The senior went 2-of-4 from the 3-point line before finishing 6-of-8 at the charity stripe. The Northridge, Calif., native added nine rebounds to close out his impressive night. Also reaching double digits and posting a career high was Funk, who registered 16 points, including the game-tying bucket with no time left in regulation. Luke Morrison chipped in 15 points and John Emezie recorded 12 points to close out the Black Knights in twin figures. Mac Hoffman tallied a team-best 11 rebounds, including three on the offensive glass. Fox earned a game-high five assists, while Morrison and Jacob Kessler posted two steals each.
Â
In a battle featuring the top two Patriot League teams, defending regular season champion Bucknell used a late surge to defeat the Boston University, 70-59, on Saturday afternoon at Sojka Pavilion. Trailing 52-46 with 7:44 remaining, Bucknell went on a 10-0 run capped by Kimbal Mackenzie's 3-pointer over a three-minute span in which the Terriers committed two turnovers and missed seven combined field goal and free throw attempts. Stephen Brown hit a 3-pointer at 3:13 to push the lead to 59-54, and Zach Thomas flushed a deep trey from the top of the key for a 64-57 advantage with 50 seconds remaining.
Justin Alston went 10-of-17 to reach 20 points for the second time in his career and finished four points shy of his career best set against Holy Cross back in December. Besides being the second Terrier to score in double figures (11 pts.), Foreman added seven assists and three of BU's 13 steals. Bucknell shot 65.4 percent in the second half to outscore the Terriers, 48-30, and win its fifth straight in the series. The Terriers hurt themselves with a 5-of-12 (.417) performance at the line, while the Bison went 18-of-27 (.667).
Â
A WIN OVER BOSTON U. WOULD...
Hand Army its ninth win of the season and earn the Black Knights their second-straight victory over the Terriers. It would also hand the Cadets their third win of the Patriot League season, pulling them to 3-6 as they begin the second part of the conference season.
Â
EFFICIENCY IS KEY
Strong shooting and the ability to spread the ball around are both keys to Army's success. The Black Knights' 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio is second in the Patriot League, while their 16.4 assists per game and 44.0 field goal percentage rank first and fifth, respectively. With no one truly dominating the ball offensively, it is helping to create open looks for shooters on the outside where the Cadets are first in the conference with 9.6 made 3-pointers per game. That mark also has them 22nd in the NCAA.
Â
SOPHOMORE SWAG
Jordan Fox has emerged as a leader for the Black Knights. He currently leads Army and is 15th in the Patriot League averaging 12.2 points per game. What's more impressive though is how he's scoring. The sophomore has converted on 87 of his 197 attempts from the floor. That's good enough for .442 percent shooting. Things don't stop there as Fox is among the leaders in the conference with a .381 mark from behind-the-arc. He is averaging 1.9 treys per outing, which is 10th in the league. In addition to that, Fox is third on the team with a .780 percentage from the charity stripe. The Jackson County, Ky., native is third in the conference with a 2.4 assists-to-turnover ratio, recording 105 assists to just 44 turnovers. And lastly, Fox has posted double figures in 13 of Army's 20 contests.
Â
NEXT UP
Army is back in Christl Arena for its next two games, hosting Bucknell on Saturday and Lafayette on Feb. 1. Saturday's contest with the Bison is set for 3 p.m., while the Cadets game with the Leopards is slated for 7 p.m. Both contest will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network. Bucknell is at Lafayette on Wednesday before traveling to West Point. The Bison bring their 7-1 conference mark into that game as they currently sit tops in the league.
