THIS WEEK: RENEWING THE RIVALRY
- After defeating the Paladins, 4-3, in Kingston, Ontario, last season, the two squads will return to Tate Rink to renew the rivalry which dates back to 1923.
- It all began in 1921 however when Superintendent Brig. Gen. Douglass MacArthur wrote a letter to Maj. Gen. Sir Archibald MacDonnell, commandant of the Royal Military College, to suggest that the two military schools play.
- The second meeting of the two military academies marked the first time that Army did not play a home game of hockey.
- It was not until 1941 that the Black Knights would travel to face their competition, except of course for the Paladins year in and year out.

EARLIER THIS WEEK: BLANKING AIC
- Tuesday night marked another close matchup between Army and AIC.
- The Black Knights were able to sneak away from Springfield, Mass., with their second shutout of the season against the Yellow Jackets after two late goals.
- Senior captain Ryan Nick netted a shorthanded game-winning goal with 2:45 left in the game. It was the first of his career, and it could not have come at a better time.
- Ian Mansfield was credited with the helper to mark his fifth point against the Yellow Jackets in his career.
- Assistant captain Tyler Pham scored the insurance goal with 45 seconds remaining on the empty net. Dominic Franco had the assist, which was a little payback as Pham had assisted the freshman's two goals last weekend.
- The effort was backstopped by an 18-save effort by Parker Gahagen, who recorded his fifth shutout of the season and ninth of his career.
- This moved the senior to second in the Army record books in both single-season shutouts and career shutouts. He leads the nation for 2016-17 with five.
ROOKIES POWER OFFENSE
- The plebe class has been the difference maker for the Black Knights' offense this season.
- The freshmen lead the team across all offensive statistical categories. Together, the freshmen account for 29 goals and 36 assists.
- Zach Evancho and Brendan Soucie lead the team with 10 goals apiece.
- Alex Wilkinson and Franco are second on the team in assists with 10 each as Wilkinson boasts the most of any defender on the team. In points, Evancho and Franco are the leaders with 17 apiece.
SPLITSVILLE
- The Atlantic Hockey Association saw no clear dominance last weekend.
- Not a single team swept their opponent, but the closest came out of Colorado where Canisius defeated Air Force 4-3 on Friday and tied the Falcons 2-2 (OT) on Saturday.
- Army and Mercyhurst split along with AIC and RIT, Sacred Heart and Holy Cross and Bentley and Niagara.
- All of the jumble and the two Army wins helped the Cadets climb to the top of the standings where they now reside in first with 23 points.
PLAY OF THE WEEK
- Although Friday night marked a loss for Army, senior goaltender Parker Gahagen made an outstanding save which was named the Army Athletic Association's Play of the Week.
- You have to see it to believe it, but here is what happened: off a Mercyhurst breakaway, Gahagen makes an initial save and gets knocked onto his back before one of the Lakers takes another shot off the rebound.
- Still on his back, Gahagen makes a miraculous save with his stick to prevent a goal.
THE RIVALRY
- For the 81st time, the U.S. Military Academy and Royal Military College of Canada will face off on the ice.
- With a rivalry that dates back to 1923, the two teams have a rich history against each other, and it is said to be one of the most storied international rivalries in the sport.
- After starting the series with a Paladins advantage, the Black Knights have fought back to regain the lead in the all-time series 44-29-7.
- This is due in part to the Riley family who account for 41 of Army's 44 wins against RMC. Brian Riley holds a 7-0-1 mark against the Paladins and was the only Army head coach to defeat RMC in their inagural meeting.
- The Paladins enter the 2017 contest with a 4-18-0 record. Dylan Giberson, Bruce Hornbrook and John Livingston lead the team with four goals each.
- Giberson is tops on the team in points with 10. Deric Boudreau is first in assists with seven.
