WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's cross country team kicks off the 2016 season with a dual meet against Maine on Friday in Orono, Maine, at 3 p.m.
The Black Knights start their third season under head coach Mike Smith. After bringing in nine new cadets, Army is looking forward to seeing how its freshmen can handle collegiate running.
Â
"We are looking forward to seeing how our freshman fit into the program and how they handle running a collegiate course," said Smith. "The majority of our women's team is made up of freshmen so our performance will be heavily relied on the newcomers. What is important to us is the process of them getting better each day and trying to do the job that each of them has when it comes to competition."
Army and Maine are facing off for the second consecutive year. Last year the Black Knights were victorious over the Black Bears winning by a score of 20-37.
ARMY (0-0, 0-0 Patriot League)
• The Black Knights are coming off a 3-4 season with wins over Hofstra, Southern Connecticut State and Maine, advancing seven runners to the NCAA Regionals.
• Junior Abby Halbrook was named as captain as a strong leader to a young group of women.
• Head coach Mike Smith enters his third season at the helm of the women's cross country program, posting a 3-6 all-time dual meet record.
STONY BROOK (0-0, 0-0 Colonial Athletic Association)
•The Black Bears placed 30th out of 38 teams at the New England Championships. Â
• They went on to take ninth at the America East Conference meet, and took five runners to the NCAA Regional.
• Last year Maine went 1-1 in dual meets.
UP NEXT
