MEN'S TENNIS SCHEDULE
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army West Point men's tennis head coach Jim Poling, who is entering his 13th year at the Academy, announced the release of the team's competition schedule for the 2016-17 academic year.
The defending Patriot League champions usher in their fall slate hosting the Army Invite Sept. 16-18, with service-academy rival Air Force part of a challenging field of eight teams.
Next up for Army is a trip to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Invite from Sept. 30-Oct. 2. The weekend of Oct. 7-9 finds Poling, the Patriot League's reigning Coach of the Year, testing his squad as he sends them to tournaments in New Hampshire and New Jersey. One group will compete at the Dartmouth Invite with the other participating in Princeton's Farnsworth Invitational.
Army hosts the annual Army Shootout scheduled for Oct. 8-9, to include Sacred Heart, Bryant and Stony Brook. Less than a week later (Oct. 13-16), Michael Nguyen, an All-Patriot League selection who compiled a 14-4 record in the spring, will be among an elite group of Division I men's singles players invited to compete at the Oracle/ITA Masters in Malibu, Calif.
As the schedule winds down, the Black Knights participate Oct. 20-25, at the ITA Regionals in Philadelphia, Pa., before closing out their fall slate Oct. 28-30, as part of the field at the Harvard Invite.
Upon returning for the spring semester, Army hosts the Black and Gold Invitational on Jan. 8.
Following the Black and Gold Invitational, the Black Knights will compete in the ATP Challenger of Dallas scheduled for Jan. 13-15, before returning home on Jan. 21 to host Marist and Sacred Heart, the beginning a stretch of a nine-match home stand.
Less than two weeks later (Feb. 4), Army will battle Furman and Loyola Marymount, and then take on Yale on Feb. 5, at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
After a match against SMU on Feb. 9, the Black Knights host Buffalo and St. Johns on Feb. 11 before UConn comes to West Point for a match on Feb. 12. Army then heads west to Lansing, MI, for contests against Michigan State (Feb. 18) and Air Force (Feb. 19).
The Black Knights return to West Point for a five-match home stand beginning on Feb. 25 with contests against Stony Brook and NJIT. Army continues its home stand on Feb. 26, against Boston College, and then has two more home matches on March 4, against Fordham and St. Bonaventure.
Spring break has the Black Knights head out west to take on Santa Cruz, St. Mary's, Santa Clara, and BYU from March 3-17.
Army returns home and opens up Patriot League play, as it hosts four different Patriot League opponents during the weekend of March 25-26. Bucknell and Lafayette come to West Point on Saturday, the 25th, while Loyola and Holy Cross take on the Black Knights on the 26th.
Army has two non-conference matches on April 2, as they battle Binghamton and Quinnipiac at home. The Cadets then travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to duel with Boston University and Lehigh on April 8th and 9th respectively.
The regular season will come to a close at West Point on April 15, when the Black Knights host the Mids for the Army-Navy star match.
