For the fourth straight season Army has opened its campaign at home in the comfy confines of Clinton Field. Under fourth-year head coach Marcia McDermott, the Black Knights have gone 2-1 in their season-openers and 17-11-2 overall in program history.
The Black Knights lead the all-time series with Albany 10-0-1. In Army's inaugural year of varsity competition (1986), the Black Knights defeated the Great Danes, 1-0, which was the two teams first ever meeting. The last time these foes met was in 2008 as part of the Governor's Cup hosted by the Great Danes. Army won that contest, 1-0.
After ending the 2015 Patriot League season in eighth place, Army was projected sixth in the 2016 preseason poll. The Black Knights return nine starters from that squad, including Clare Shea, who finished second on the team with seven points, and Jordan Cassalia, who started in goal during each of her first three seasons.
Friday night's opposition, Albany, was picked in its preseason poll to repeat as America East Champions. Albany is coming off its best season in program history, tying for second place in America East and winning its first-ever league tournament with a 2-1 comeback victory over Hartford in the title game. The team played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time and fell to eventual national champion Penn State, finishing with a program single season record 11 victories.
The Great Danes return six starters from the league title team, including the program's first-ever two-time America East All-Conference First Team player Alexa Schneider in the midfield, two-time all-conference forward Vivian Vega and 2015 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast All-Region defender Caroline Kopp.
Following its season and home opener, Army welcomes Seton Hall on Monday for a 7 p.m. tilt on Clinton Field. The Pirates open their season on Friday as well, traveling to Philadelphia to face off against Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m.
