Former DII Head Coach Named Associate Head and Recruiting Coordinator
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army head baseball coach Jim Foster announced the hiring of six-time ABCA/Rawlings Region and seven-time NEIBA Division II Coach of the Year Jayson King as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator.
Â
"This is a great day for our program," Foster said. "I would like to welcome Jay and his wonderful family to West Point. The contributions that Coach King will make to West Point and our student-athletes will be tremendous."
Â
King comes to West Point after serving 18 seasons as the head coach at DII Franklin Pierce.
"To have someone with his experience join us and be a huge part of what we are building here is very fortunate," Foster added. "He has built a program from scratch into one of the best in the country, in addition, his reputation for recruiting and developing talent is second to none and his track record speaks for itself.Â
"He will no doubt bring in players that can play college baseball at the highest level, be very good in the classroom, be men of character and develop into leaders in their chosen fields and for their country. Together as a staff we will help these players achieve great success."
Â
The Canton, Mass., native inherited a Ravens team that went 8-21 in 1998 and 40-103-2 under three different coaches in the last five years before his arrival. From that point on though he spent his time building Franklin Pierce into a regional powerhouse and perennial national title contender. Under his watch, the Ravens captured seven NCAA Regional titles (2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2016), been an NCAA semifinalist on three occasions (2003, 2006, 2010), collected five Northeast-10 Conference titles (2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2015) and taken home nine Northeast-10 regular season titles (2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016).
Â
King leaves Franklin Pierce after having posted a record of 650-291-3 (.690 winning percentage) in 944 games. Including two previous years at Massachusetts Boston, his career record over 1,016 games stands at 675-338-3 (.666) across 20 seasons.
Â
In his time at Franklin Pierce, King mentored 31 All-America selections, 87 All-Region honorees and 128 All-Conference players, including 125 since joining the Northeast-10 in 2001. Also under his guidance, nine different players have earned Conference Pitcher of the Year honors, while seven have been named Northeast-10 Player of the Year and three have collected Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year accolades.
Â
Just as impressive as the collegiate accolades has been King's ability to produce players who eventually move into professional baseball. Since the program's first draftee in 2001, the Ravens have produced 28 players who have been selected in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft over the last 15 years. The number ranks third among all schools in New England in the timeframe, regardless of division, trailing only Boston College (44 draft picks) and Connecticut (44).
Â
In King's final season at Franklin Pierce, the Ravens (48-9) captured their seventh NCAA Regional title in program history. The Ravens claimed their fifth straight Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division title as well.
Â
King also has national team coaching experience as he helped guide the United States U-18 National Team to a gold medal at the 2014 Pan American Games.
A 1993 graduate of Framingham State with a bachelor's degree in sociology, King was a four-year letterwinner for the Rams. In 1996, he earned his master's degree in physical education from Springfield.
King's wife Missy, daughter Katie and son Justin will be joining him at West Point.
