Softball Falls to Boston in Championship Game
May 15, 2016 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Army West Point softball team fell 9-0 Sunday afternoon to Boston University in the Patriot League Championship game. The Black Knights fought its way out of the loser's bracket to make it to the title contest, but fell short to the Terriers in five innings.
Kasey McCravey, Alee Rashenskas and Renee Poirier were all named to the All-Tournament team for Army.
The Terriers jumped ahead in the first inning fueled by G. Martinez' two-run single by G. Martinez. Boston held off Army and scored three more runs in the top of the fourth capitalizing on three hits and two Black Knight errors.
In the bottom of the fourth, Army recorded its first hit of the game when Rashenskas laced a ball up the middle. The Terriers were able to get out of the inning unscathed, but Rashenskas snapped the no-hitter and perfect game for Melanie Russell, the Patriot League Pitcher of the Year.
After 329 pitches over four-straight games at the tournament, Rookie of the Year pitcher Renee Poirier of Army turned the circle over to Kristen West, who took over in relief in the top of the fifth. Boston padded its lead to 9-0 when K. Sahlinger and B. Younan recorded two RBI each.
The Black Knights had one more at-bat, but Boston's defense denied them a chance for a comeback and completed the game with a 9-0 lead after five innings.
The 2016 squad recorded the winningest season in Army softball history with 39 wins. The most wins prior to this season was 37 back in 2012 under present mentor Michelle DePolo, who was voted this year's "Coach of the Year" for the second time in her career.
