Softball Holds off Bucknell, Advances to Face Lehigh
May 14, 2016 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After almost a 24 hour delay due to unruly weather, the No. 2 Army West Point and No. 4 Bucknell softball teams returned to Leadership Park to resume their elimination game. The Black Knights came away with a 3-2 victory after a late scare from the Bison. Poirier went six innings without a hit and only one Bison made it on base after a walk.
With the score locked at 0-0 after one inning, the Black Knights (38-19) tested their bats first under the sun in Bethlehem, Pa. Emily Gray led-off with a single up the middle and was followed by Kristen McPeek (2-for-3) who laced an RBI triple to right center to start the game off with a run for the Cadets. Gladys Esparza-Gallegos then knocked a single to center field which sent McPeek home to give Army a 2-0 advantage. In the home half of the second inning, Renee Poirier continued to show her dominance from the rubber. The freshman retired the next three batters including two strikeouts, to make it six-straight. Through her first 23 pitches, 18 of them were strikes.
In the top of the third, the Black Knights continued to excel when Kasey McCravey notched a single up the middle on a full count. Mae Wadyka then grounded out to second, but forced McCravey into scoring position for Army before advancing to third on a deep pop out. McPeek recorded an RBI when she hit a single to right field allowing McCravey to score and go ahead 3-0. When Bucknell (27-23) was at-bat, Poirier continued her streak to 11-straight retired batters before walking the 12th.
In the bottom of the seventh the Bison snapped Poirier's no-hitter after 18 of 19 batters were retired. Bucknell got on the board on a fielder's choice. With no outs on the board, the Bison put two in scoring position. Bucknell tallied run number two on a sacrifice fly to right field. With the tying run on third, Alee Rashenskas got the Cadets' second out before Gray closed the game with an unassisted out at first getting the Black Knights out of the jam and preserving their 3-2 victory.
Poirier was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts, four swinging, to improve to 10-5 on the year. Maddie Kim and McPeek both tallied two hits apiece. McPeek also recorded a pair of RBI, while Esparza-Gallegos had one.
No. 2 Army will now face No. 1 Lehigh at 12:00 p.m. from Leadhership Park. The winner of that game will then play Boston U. in the championship game.
