Softball Set for Patriot League Tournament

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Army West Point softball team begins play in the Patriot League Tournament Thursday through Saturday at Leadership Park with the hopes to bring home the title for the first time since the 2013 season. The Black Knights enter as the second seed and will open play Thursday at 2:35 p.m. against No. 3 Boston University. Host and top-seeded Lehigh begin earlier in the day at 12:35 p.m. against No. 4 Bucknell.

Army enters the postseason after a record-breaking regular season with 37 wins. The previous record was 35 set by the 2012 squad. It was the first time since 2013 that the Cadets had reached double-digit league victories. The most was 14 set back in 2012.

2016 marks the Black Knights' seventh-straight berth to the tournament. It is the 22nd time that the Cadets have made it to the league tournament. The Black Knights have made it to the tournament final 12 times.

This season, Army boasts a 7-2 mark against the tournament field with three-game sweeps over Boston U. and Bucknell and a 1-2 performance against Lehigh.

The hosting Mountain Hawks went 5-3 against the field. They split their series 1-1 against the Terriers and lost one game apiece to the Bison and Cadets to finish 13-4 in the league.

Boston U. returns to the tournament after missing the cut last season and winning the title in 2014. The Terriers finished league play with an 11-6 record. They went 3-5 against opponents at the tournament.

Bucknell is 3-6 against the four teams in attendance as the Bison picked up a solo win from each team to wrap-up conference play at 11-7.

DePolo is in her seventh season at the helm of the Black Knights. During her tenure, Army has qualified for the Patriot League Tournament every year, and hosted as the regular season champions in 2010. DePolo has led the Black Knights to the Championship round twice, 2012 and 2013, capturing the crown in the latter.

The Black Knights captured Patriot League championships in 1991, 1992, 2000, 2002 and 2013, the last two as the No. 2 seed.
