Softball Falls to Terriers in First Game of Tournament
May 12, 2016 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The No. 2 Army West Point softball team dropped its opening game in the Patriot League Tournament, 3-2, to No. 3 Boston U. at Leadership Park.
The Terriers (26-22) took command of the game in the first inning after scoring a run fueled by a double to right center field by Gabi Martinez. In the home half of the inning, Alee Rashenskas reached base with a single up the middle, and though Army (37-19) was not able to convert any runs in that frame, found holes in the Boston U. defense.
In the top of the second, Boston threatened with one out and a runner on third, but Maddie Kim and Kasey McCravey ran down the potential scorer to prevent the Terriers from tacking onto their lead. In the bottom half of that inning, Gladys Esparza-Gallegos drew a walk and moved to third on Caroline Smith's (3-for-3) double to left center as the Black Knights threatened with two runners in scoring position. Tyler McKinney entered as the pinch runner on third, but Boston's Melanie Russel, the Pitcher of the Year, retired the Cadets' next two batters to maintain Boston's 1-0 lead.
The Terriers struck in the third inning with two runs on three hits to increase their advantage to 3-0 in the process knocking out starter Caroline Smith and bringing in the league's Rookie of the Year, Renee Poirier, to the circle in the top of the fourth. Poirier, who retired the side, scattered three hits over four innings of scoreless ball, struck out two batters and did not issue a walk to the 15 batters she faced.
Neither team scored in the next two innings, but the Cadets posted a run in the home half of the sixth with two outs on the board.
Smith ripped a single to left field then gave way to pinch runner Hailey Megge. Pinch hitter Carrie Reilly's sacrifice bunt advanced Megge to second. Ashley Yoo's infield popup sent Megge to third to give Army another scoring chance. Mae Wadyka's RBI sinlge down the left field line chased Megge home for the Black Knights' first run of the game to cut the Terriers' lead to 3-1.
McCravey (2-for-4) led off for the Black Knights in the bottom of the sixth and notched her first hit of the game. Rashenskas drew a walk to push McCravey into scoring positio followed by a walk to Esparza that loaded the bases for Army. Smith's RBI infield single scored McCravey as the Black Knights closed the gap to a sinlge run at 3-2.
Poirier opend the seventh with a strikeout followed by a base runner, but Army earned the second out before Poirier assisted on the final out.
Trailing by one in their final at-bat, the Black Knights put the tying run on base as McCravey hit a single to left field with two outs to keep the game alive, but the Terriers got out safely with a flyout to advance to Friday's winners' bracket game against No. 1 Lehigh, who escaped with a 1-0 win over No. 4 Bucknell in the first game of the tournament..
Army will now face No. 4 Bucknell at 11:30 a.m. from Leadhership Park in the double-elimination tournament. The winner of that game will then play the loser of the 9 a.m. Boston-Lehigh game.
