Men’s Tennis Captures Three Major League Awards
May 10, 2016 | Men's Tennis
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – The Army West Point men's tennis team captured three of the Patriot League's four major awards, announced on Tuesday. Jim Poling was honored as Coach of the Year, David Mitchell earned Freshman of the Year and Harrison McCormick and Grant Riechmann were named the Doubles Team of the Year.
Additionally, Sam Lampman was named to the All-Patriot League First Team while Mitchell, Michael Nguyen, and Riechmann garnered All-Patriot League Second Team honors.
Poling led the Black Knights to an 18-8 record and a Patriot League Title over Navy to earn his fifth Coach of the Year award. It was the third-straight season Army reach at least 18 wins, its ninth league title and seventh NCAA Tournament berth. In the first win of the spring, Poling earned his 200th career victory at Army, the only men's tennis coach to do so at Army.
Mitchell earns Freshman of the Year accolades after a stellar rookie season that included Patriot League Tournament MVP honors earlier this month. The IMG Academy product posted a 10-5 spring singles record. Mitchell found a home in the third singles flight where he was 7-2. He finished the season 6-0 against league foes including the tournament. He has won eight of his last nine completed singles matches and adds a 4-3 doubles record to his resume. He is the only freshman on either All-League team.
McCormick and Riechmann played all 16 of their spring doubles matches in the top position. The combination boasted an 8-8 record, including going 2-1 in league play. McCormick now ranks tied for ninth in school history in career doubles wins (54) while Riechmann (41) is just 10 wins shy of cracking the top 15. Additionally, Riechmann earned second team honors for the third straight season. The Houston, Texas native played exclusively in the top two flights in singles and finished 11-11. In the second slot, where he played the majority of his matches, he finished 8-5. Riechmann is now at 39 career singles wins, nine shy of the top 15 in Academy history.
Lampman was named to the first team for the second-straight season after being named to the second team as a freshman. The Orlando, Fla., native was sidelined for a month near the beginning of the season, but came back to post a 3-10 singles record, 2-2 against Patriot League foes, and an 11-2 doubles record, with nine of those wins coming with Nguyen. It marks the 23rd straight year that Army has at least one player on the first team.
Nguyen led Army in singles wins this spring with a 14-4 record. He consistently played in the fourth flight, where he was 10-3, and ended the season with six straight wins. Nguyen added a 12-5 overall doubles record. It's the first time the sophomore has been honored by the Patriot League and he was one of only four sophomores to be recognized by the Patriot League this season.
