Schultz Named PL Scholar-Athlete of the Year

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Senior tri-captain Austin Schultz was selected as the Patriot League's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men's lacrosse on Wednesday for his outstanding achievements in the classroom.
The defenseman is a three-time member of the Patriot League All-Academic Team, including the 2016 team. He has a 3.62 grade point average as an economics major at the U.S. Military Academy and has numerous academic accolades. He has earned Distinguished Cadets honors three times and has been on the Dean's List for each of his seven terms at the academy.
On the field, Schultz was selected to the All-Patriot League First Team for the third time in his career. He has posted career highs in ground balls with 21 and has posted a career best 15 caused turnovers. Schultz is the leader of the defense that is ranked in the top 10 nationally and has been throughout his three years with the Black Knights.
Joining Schultz on the All-Academic Team were first-time members Jimbo Moore and Sam Finney. Army led all Patriot League schools with three honorees on the Academic All-Patriot League.
Moore is a system engineering major that makes the list with a 3.582 GPA. He is a three-time member of the Patriot League Honor Roll and has enjoyed a great season on the field. Moore was named first team All-Patriot League after tallying 12 goals and seven assists for 19 points during the regular season. He eclipsed his career high in the win over Lehigh with two goals to give him 21 points on the year.
Finney is new to the list as well after starting all 14 games so far this year and becoming a major contributor to Army's success. The philosophy and Portugese double major has a 3.721 GPA in his three-plus years at West Point. He has jumped into the starting lineup in 2016 and has meshed well with Schultz and Reaves Klipstein. Finney has a career best 13 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers this season.
To be eligible for the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award and the Academic All-Patriot League Team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport. Freshmen or students in their first academic year at their school are not eligible for the honor.
The Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each individual sport comprises the pool of nominees for the Patriot League Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards given out over the summer. One male and one female are selected for this honor.
The Black Knights are back in action on Friday night in the Patriot League Semifinals against top-seeded Navy at 4:30 p.m. from Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. All three games during the championship weekend will be live on CBS Sports Network.
