THE OPENING FACEOFF
The fourth-seeded Army West Point men's lacrosse team hosts No. 5 seeded Lehigh on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Army is making its 12th-straight league tournament appearance, which is the longest streak in the conference. The Black Knights are looking to rebound after a pair of losses down the stretch, while the Mountain Hawks have lost four in a row heading into Tuesday's matchup at Michie Stadium. The two teams met on March 12 at West Point with the Black Knights earning a 13-10 win, thanks to a seven-goal third quarter and six points from Cole Johnson.
LAST TIME OUT
The Black Knights played for a chance at an opening round bye against No. 9/11 Loyola last Friday night down in Baltimore. The Greyhounds scored five goals in the second quarter en route to a 12-6 win as Loyola earned the bye into the Patriot League Semifinals. Jimbo Moore posted two goals, while Cole Johnson recorded three assists in the loss. The Black Knights were outshot, 41-36, in the game and the Greyhounds won the ground-ball battle with 34 pickups to Army's 25. The teams were even in faceoffs with 11 wins each in 22 opportunities.
Today'S STORYLINES
The Black Knights make their second-straight appearance in the Patriot League Quarterfinals after the conference went to the six-team format in 2015. This is the first postseason game at Michie Stadium since Army hosted the tournament and won it in 2010. Army has a slim 3-2 lead in the last five games, including this year's win at home. The five games have been decided by a total of nine goals with a pair of one-goal games. There is a connection between the two coaches as Kevin Cassese played lacrosse at Duke during Joe Alberici's stint as an assistant coach with the Blue Devils. Cassese is a 2003 graduate of Duke University and was recruited by Alberici. Army leads the series between the two coaches at 6-5.
