Poirier Earns AAA and Rookie of the Week Honors
April 25, 2016 | Softball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher Renee Poirier has been named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week after going 2-0 and allowing no earned runs. Poirier was also named the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week for her outstanding performance in the circle.
Â
"Renee has improved dramatically since the fall season and it's a true testament to her own personal investment in getting better," said head coach Michelle DePolo. "She has put in a great deal of time on her own, and invested in what the coaching staff has taught her. She a great example of how hard work and a great attitude pay off."
Â
Poirier did not allow an earned run over 14 innings in a pair of complete-game victories for the Black Knights last week. She allowed four hits and a walk with three strikeouts in a 3-1 victory over Quinnipiac on Wednesday, then tossed a three-hit shutout in Army's 4-0 win in the middle contest of a three-game weekend sweep of Holy Cross.
Â
"Over the off season we worked a lot on taking control of her pitches along with learning new pitches to add to her arsenal," explained DePolo. "She's done a lot and still has a lot of room to grow. It'll be exciting to see how she continues over the course of her career here."
Â
The Plainville, Mass., native held her opponents to a .140 batting average.
Â
"One of her best attributes is how poised she has stayed in very tense situations," DePolo said. "She's been a great addition to a very diverse staff. I've been really proud of entire pitching staff this year and how well they have worked together and taken shape during the season. They all contribute to one another's success because of how different each member is and they each have a team-first attitude."
Â
Army improved to 30-16 last week and 10-4 in the Patriot League. The Cadets have won five-straight for a season long streak. It is the first time since the 2013 season that Army has reached 30 wins, and it is the first time since 2013 that the BKs have accumulated double-digit conference victories.
Â
The Cadets return to the Army Softball Complex Tuesday for a doubleheader with Hudson Valley rival Marist. Game one is set to begin at 4 p.m.
