Men’s Tennis Narrowly Misses Star
April 23, 2016 | Men's Tennis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The top two men's tennis teams in the Patriot League battled toe-to-toe on Friday afternoon as Navy overcome Army by the score of 4-2 in the annual Star Match. It was the Black Knights first loss in league play in five matches and now stand at 15-8 overall. The Midshipmen clinched the top spot in the Patriot League Championships next week with a 5-0 league record and 20-8 overall record.
The grueling battle was decided in the second singles position between two former high school classmates. Army's Grant Riechmann and Navy's Thomas Pecor, both 2013 graduates of Memorial High School in Houston, Texas, put on a fascinating display of tennis. The back and forth affair went into a first set tiebreaker that saw Pecor win 7-6 (7-4). The Mids junior than won the second set in another nail-bitter, taking it 7-5 to clinch the match for Navy.
Sophomore Michael Nguyen was the first off the court in singles. His 6-2, 6-2 win in the fourth singles position was his fourth straight singles victory.
Senior Harrison McCormick added the only other win for Army. His straight set victory of 7-6 (10-8), 6-0 improves his record to 8-7 this spring.
The doubles point went to Navy to start the match. Junior Kyle Barnes and senior Austin McCasin earned a hard-fought win in the second doubles flight 6-4 while the Midshipmen won the first and third doubles flights.
The Black Knights now go into the Patriot League Championships as the number two seed. The two service academies have split the league crown every year since 2007.
