Defense Starts Fast, Offense Closes Out Scrimmage
April 23, 2016 | Football
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point football team completed its second scrimmage of the spring on Saturday with the defense starting hot, but the offense finished strong.
After stretching and warm ups, the Black Knights got right into the scrimmage and it didn't take long for points to be scored, but not from the offense. Mike Reynolds jumped a wide receiver screen and intercepted the first pass of the scrimmage for a touchdown.
The defense controlled much of the first part of the scrimmage with third down stops and big hits by Steven Johnson and Andrew King. Gibby Gibson and Chandler Ramirez recorded sacks of Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Carter.
On the offensive side, fullback Andy Davidson continues to impress with tough yardage runs, including back-to-back first down scampers. Carter had good moments with a 33-yard pass to Luke Peterman, but the offensive momentum picked up during the two-minute drill.
The first drive was highlighted by a 26-yard catch to Christian Poe from Carter, and then the quarterback connected with Elijah St. Hilaire for a big gain down the middle. After clocking the ball, Carter lofted the ball to the corner of the end zone and Edgar Poe went up to grab it for the first offensive touchdown of the day.
The next drive saw Edgar Poe make another highlight-reel catch on the sideline and Jeff Ejekam also hauled in a pass as well. With it first-and-goal from the seven yard line, Cole Macek got the handoff and busted through the line, kept his feet moving and made it over the goal line for the touchdown for the final scoring play of the scrimmage.
Head coach Jeff Monken had a guest appearance by former NFL head coach Chan Gailey, who stopped by at the end of practice while touring West Point.
The Black Knights are a week away from the Spring Game, which is set for 1 p.m. on April 30 at Michie Stadium.
