Errors Plague Baseball in Game Two
April 23, 2016 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – After committing zero errors for just the fifth time this season in game one, the Army West Point baseball team was plagued by four miscues in game two allowed Navy to come away with a 6-2 victory in game two to complete the Saturday sweep at Max Bishop Stadium.
"We just need to play a clean game," said head coach Matt Reid. "We did some good things, but made some mistakes that are easily fixable. We will learn from these two games and make adjustments. We have tough players that will respond tomorrow."
The Midshipmen (31-11-1, 10-4 PL) took advantage of an early miscue by the Black Knights (14-26, 5-9 PL) as a wild pitch that was compounded by a throwing error allowed Robert Currie to score the game's first run from second base.
Army sophomore Jeremy Mortensen was dialed in throughout his 10th start of the season, tossing 5.2 innings of four-hit baseball. The Coppell, Texas native allowed two walks while striking out three in the game. Mortensen retired 11 of the next 12 Mids after a leadoff error started the bottom of the second with the lone hit being negated with a double play.
The Black Knights had been on the verge of scoring all day, getting a runner on base in all but one of the first six innings of play, and that is when they would finally break through to tie the game. Junior Kris Lindner earned his second leadoff base knock of the game with a double in the bottom of the sixth. He would score on a sacrifice fly by David Monge to tie the game at one. The duo would tie the game again in the eighth inning after Lindner's one-out triple.
Navy would retake the lead in the bottom of each inning that Army scored, posting a four-spot in the bottom of the eighth.
Tomorrow's doubleheader is scheduled to start at noon with a seven inning contest, while game two will begin approximately half an hour after the conclusion of game one with a nine inning affair.
