Three-Run Inning Squanders Game One for Army
April 23, 2016 | Baseball
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Army West Point baseball jumped out to an early 2-0 lead against one of the nation's top pitchers, but Navy's three-run fifth was enough to give the 3-2 victory in the series opener from Max Bishop Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Navy's (30-11-1, 9-4 PL) ace, Luke Gillingham, was a little shaky in the early going after setting down the Black Knights (14-25, 5-8 PL) in order. Back-to-back innings with a leadoff hit followed in the second and third innings, allowing Army to put some pressure on the Mids' senior lefty. John McCarthy singled to lead off the second inning and Jacob Page started the third inning the same way. Three batters after Monge reached on an error, a two-out ground-rule double by Jon Rosoff opened the scoring.
Not to be outdone, Matt Ball produced a one-two-three inning in the home half of the opening inning. Freshman third baseman Trey Martin had a hand in all three outs, tracking down a foul pop up before handling a pair of grounders. Ball allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out three through his first four innings of work, but struggled in his final inning.
The Midshipmen answered back in the bottom of the fifth as they tacked on three runs with five hits. After a couple of hits started the inning, a double play on a fly ball to center field and a perfect relay caught Leland Saile too far off third to preserve the shutout.
Gillingham thrived off of the energy from Navy's first lead of the game, striking out five of his last seven batters faced.
Game two is scheduled to start around 2:45 p.m.
